Following its romp over Cortland on Nov. 28, the Liverpool wrestling team went to Homer High School for the Denny Wright Memorial Duals and swept to the team title.
The Warriors’ 4-0 run started with a 57-27 win over Whitney Point, where it was tied, 27-27, with five bouts to go, but Liverpool swept the rest of them, mostly through forfeits.
Jacob Ianno did compete at 120 pounds, though, and pinned James Nelsen before Charlie Tran closed at 126 pounds with a pin over Aiden Rosa. Steve Pascarella (138 pounds) won, 6-0, over Alex Barnhart as Shane Hazelmyer (160 pounds) and Noah Smith (220 pounds) each got their own pins.
A 72-16 romp of Chittenango followed, with Tran, Dom Ianno (145 pounds) and Jeremy Ianno (113 pounds) getting pins, as did J.J. Guindy, who earned a fall over the Bears’ Ethan Ferguson at 285 pounds.
It got much closer against Homer, but Liverpool pulled it out 37-29, not clinching it until the next-to-last bout, when Pascarella pulled away from John Denkenberger in a 9-1 decision.
Prior to that, Homer had bolted to a 16-0 lead before Anthony Piscatelli, at 182 pounds, put Liverpool on the board with a second-period pin over Lane Quaile.
Then, starting at 220 pounds, Liverpool won six of seven bouts, Hamier Williams-Borges pinning Tayvn Malchak in 2:36 before Guindy’s 27-second pin of Raiden Sturdevant and Matt Spoto (99 pounds) topping Collin Stevens 9-1.
Jeremy Ianno held off Jacob Rice 6-3, right before Jacob Ianno’s pin of Kaiden Haynes in 2:34 as Tran blanked Carter Monroe 7-0. Jeremiah Paulson (132 pounds) had a narrow 9-7 loss to Zack Duff as Ron Cyr (195 pounds) fell 5-2 to Sam Sorenson.
To close the day, Liverpool rallied to win 48-37 over Beaver River. Early pins from Piscatelli and Michael Wayman (170 pounds) got Liverpool going. Then Beaver River won five straight bouts, taking a 33-12 lead.
But Jeremy Ianno’s pin of Andrew Walseman began a comeback where Tran and Jacob Ianno got pins, too, while Pascarella pinned Wyatt Mullin and Jeremiah Paulson claimed a forfeit.
Now in front 40-33, Liverpool couldn’t clinch it at 145, where Dom Ianno lost 9-1 to Connor Everson, but Chris Ianno, in the finale at 152, pinned Deakin Carrow to complete the Warriors’ sweep of the day.
Liverpool wrestled Saturday at the Portville Invitational, where it finished second in a 14-team field with 219.5 points, trailing only Iroquois, who won with 273 points.
Williams-Borges claimed the title at 195 when he pinned Portville’s Julian Morales in 44 seconds. Jeremy Ianno’s 11-6 win over Michael Schiffhauer (Iroquois) meant a victory at 113 as Jacob Ianno edged Southwestern’s Michael Carnes 3-1 for top honors at 120.
Fegley reached the finals at 285 before a 7-3 defeat to Nick Barrett (Avoca) left him in second place. Rocco Degiormo was third at 106, with Pascarella third at 138 and Hazelmyer third at 160. Cyr, Jeremiah Paulson (145) and Josh Gatewood (195) had fourth-place finishes.
