Area high school bowling teams had a full slate of matches during the first full week of December, and it began with the first perfect game of the Section III season.
It came from Fayetteville-Manlius junior Kevin Winschel, who in last Monday’s match against West Genesee reached the magic 300 number as the Hornets, by a 3-0 margin, gave the Wildcats its first defeat of the season.
Winschel, whose three older siblings were all F-M bowling team captains, started with a 216 game and improved to a 222 in his second game.
Then, in the third game, the strikes added up. Winschel had shot a 288 in a Nov. 29 match against Fulton, but here he went past that mark and, in the 10th frame, completed it with three straight strikes for his 300 and a series total of 738.
Supporting Winschel’s efforts, Adam Koss had a 527 series and 197 high game, with Dan Fiumara adding a 480 series. On WG’s side, Jon Zollo led with a 558 series and 175 high game.
F-M’s girls team rolled past West Genesee 3-0, led by Shelby Minor, whose 573 series included a high game of 193. Lydia Chase’s 176 game was part of a 479 set as Rachel Hance earned a 437 series. Gina Neri, with a 451 series (174 high game), paced the Wildcats.
Christian Brothers Academy lost both of its matches last Monday against Solvay at Strike-N-Spare, though the boys match was close, a 4-3 defeat by the Brothers to the Bearcats.
Eddie Niles’ 200 game led to a 498 series, with Garrett Bowman getting a 484 series and Nate Vault adding a 471 series. But they all trailed Solvay’s Alex Gallardo, who led all individuals with a three-game total of 537.
In the girls match, CBA lost, 7-0, with Gabrielle Zollo getting a 370 series and Anna Ziemba getting a three-game total of 355. Five Bearcats had series of 374 or better, led by Rebecca Ducey’s 436 set as Caitlin McCann’s 180 game led to a 424 series.
CBA did rebound on Wednesday, beating Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 5-2 on the girls side as Ziemba’s 164 game led to a 394 series and Sophia Schultz contributed a 394 set.
It was a 7-0 shutout for the CBA boys against the Rebels, with no big scored required as, again, Niles led all individuals with a 461 series, just ahead of the 450 series from Vault.
Bishop Grimes claimed both of last Monday’s matches with Chittenango. In the 3-0 boys victory, Jeff Dargiewicz earned a 467 series, with a 188 high game as Matt Rogers contributed a 447 series and high game of 157.
By a 2-1 margin, the Grimes girls handled Chittenango as Raquel McDonald again led the Cobras, shooting a 421 series and 163 high game. Makenna Gadway added a 382 series as Abbie Austin paced the Bears with a three-game total of 392.
On Thursday, the Grimes boys team lost 7-0 to Solvay. Rogers and Connor Alexander both shot 424 series to lead the Cobras, but that trailed the 637 series from Gallardo that included a 257 high game.
