Even as it had an historic victory in last winter’s Section III Division I playoffs, the Baldwinsville ice hockey team still left the 2017-18 season without total satisfaction.
For the Bees’ four-overtime shootout win over undefeated, state no. 1-ranked West Genesee in the sectional semifinals at Shove Park was followed by a defeat to Syracuse in the sectional final at the War Memorial.
This means that the 2018-19 B’ville squad was back with plenty to still accomplish, and opponents got a glimpse at what was possible for the Bees during last weekend’s Bobby Conklin Memorial Tournament at Lysander Arena.
Tested by scrimmages against Skaneateles, Whitesboro and Clinton, B’ville faced Fulton last Friday and unleashed a furious attack that resulted in double-digit goals and an 11-0 win over the Red Raiders.
It was 5-0 after one period, and more followed, with Parker Schroeder at the forefront as he netted a career-best four goals and tacked on two assists.
Mark Monaco and Luke Hoskin each scored twice, Monaco adding two assists as Alex Pompo, Jamey Natoli and Mike Marsallo also had two assists. Cam Sweeney and Braden Lynch each had one goal and one assist as Michael Carni also found the net. Single assists went to Casey Scott, Zach Cole and Quinn Sweeney.
A day later, it was B’ville against Watertown IHC, and though it was far less lopsided, the Bees still claimed the first-place trophy by a comfortable margin, defeating the Cavaliers 6-2.
Never trailing, B’ville answered even when IHC broke through the Bees’ defenses and had Carson Barrett net goals in both the second and third periods.
Constant pressure took a toll as B’ville took 49 shots to the Cavaliers’ 11. Matt Carner emerged, scoring twice, with Cam Sweeney and Tyler Derito each getting a pair of assists Marsallo, Cooper Foote and Quinn Sweeney had one goal apiece as Christian Ficara also earned an assist.
B’ville would face Liverpool Tuesday at the Lysander facility the two programs share before the Bees travel to Morrisville State IcePlex to play Cazenovia Friday night.
