With two consecutive Section III Class B winter championships in the books, the Chittenango girls volleyball team has nothing else other than a three-peat on the mind as 2018-19 gets underway.
In its season opener last Thursday night, the Bears faced Pulaski and proceeded to flatten the Blue Devils 25-9 in each of the first two sets, and while the third set was tighter, Chittenango still prevailed 25-23 to complete the sweep.
Savannah Penoyer’s five aces set the night’s tone. Up front, Tyla Cutrie had five kills, with Bayla Cutrie contributing four kills and four assists as Shelby Maring and Katie Simmons each got five assists, Maring adding three kills.
Chelsea Lamphere also earned three kills, with Sydney Pellman contributing three aces. Carolyn Myka and Natalie Cowburn had two kills apiece as Chloe Foran had three digs. Chittenango would take on CBA Monday and hosts Cato-Meridian Friday night
Also underway last week, Chittenango’s bowling teams took defeats to Solvay at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, though the girls Bears were able to earn a pair of points in a 5-2 defeat to the Bearcats.
Ellie Knox paced Chittenango, shooting a 167 game on her way to a 389 series. Brooke DiFlorio had a 379 series, with Abbie Austin (362 series) just ahead of Keelin Davie (355 series) as Solvay’s Abby Lee led all individuals with a 439 series.
The Chittenango boys lost, 7-0, to Solvay, with Nick Bailey recording the best three-game total of 413 for the Bears. Alex Gallardo paced the Bearcats with a 581 series and high game of 213.
