Having moved into the no. 21 spot in the latest state Class B rankings, the Chittenango girls cross country team followed up with an impressive effort at Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet.
In cold, wet conditions at Long Branch Park, the Bears, led by individual runner-up McKenzie Dombroski, finished second in the 10-team field with 81 points, ahead of well-established powers like Westhill (third) and Cazenovia (fourth).
Only Christian Brothers Academy, no. 5 in the state rankings, topped Chittenango, winning with 29 points as it had five of the top 14 individual finishers, including Olivia Morganti, who won in 18 minutes, 49.4 seconds.
There was quite a battle behind Morganti, and Dombroski won it. The Chittenango senior finished in 20:34 flat, just beating out CBA’s Cory Knox, who was third in 20:40.2.
Then Chelsea Lamphere made her way to eighth place for the Bears in 21:30.8, while McKayla Capeling just missed a top-10 finish, settling for 11th place in 21:42.7.
It took Piper Beckwith finishing 29th in 22:56.5 and Kiara Waite getting 31st place in 23:12.8 to help the Bears hold off Westhill by 13 points for that second-place spot. Jada Sowich was 46th in 24:26.6, one spot ahead of Lailah Emad (24:28.2) in 47th place.
Among the 12 teams in the OHSL Liberty boys race, Chittenango got to fifth place, with 110 points. It was tightly-bunched race at the top as Skaneateles (81 points) held off Hannibal (87 points) and Westhill (88 points) to prevail.
Ersilio Cerminaro led the Bears, getting to fifth place in 17:40.4 as CBA’s Riley Nash won the individual race in 17:07 flat. Dave Gratien made his way to 10th place in 18:02.5.
Nate Lampman posted a time of 18:49.3 and finished in 24th place. Dylan Price got 30th place in 19:07.9. David Seale was 41st in 19:53.6 as Tristan LaFountaine was 47th in 20:07.1 and Justin Fukes posted 20:36.3.
Cazenovia was ninth with 223 points, the Lakers led by Noah DeRochie, whose time of 18:48.4 put him in 23rd place, with Jared Smith close behind as he ran to 27th place in 18:57.8.
Leading the next group of Cazenovia runners, Stan Angus was 54th in 20:30.3, with Chris Stevens 58th in 20:38.6. Torin Monohan, in 20:44.1, was just ahead of Hunter McCullough (20:44.8) and Justin Ossont (20:45.0).
Now, Cazenovia and Chittenango runners would each prepare for this Saturday’s Section III championship races at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill. The Class B and C races are the last four on the card, starting at 12:20.
