With more wins last week, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis ended the 2018 regular season like so many others in the last 30-plus years, without any blemishes.
F-M handled Baldwinsville for the second time this season last Monday afternoon, the Hornets prevailing 7-0 as Phoebe Wang routed Lauren Devine 6-0, 6-1, with Katerina Atallah turning back Brooke Tutor 6-2, 6-1. Anna Manta went a bit longer in the second set, but still beat Audrey Benton 6-1, 6-4.
Rachel Liu and Martha Welker’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Reagan Doan and Hanna Manning started the Hornets’ doubles charge as Alexis Ahn and Keara Polovick won over Hannah Gould and Paige Tromblee 6-1, 6-0.
Maddy Drapeau, paired with Cassie Wojtasiewicz, handled McKenna Murphy and Ella Tromblee 6-0, 6-2 as Ava Abruzzese and Samhitha Adavikolanu won 6-1, 6-2 over Elizabeth Costanzo and Katrina Hays-Peterson.
One twist to 2018, though, is that, for the Section III Class A team tournament, the top-seeded Hornets could, at last, face another unbeaten power, Christian Brothers Academy, who has the no. 6 seed, in the finals.
CBA also wrapped up an unbeaten regular season, playing last Tuesday and wiping out Mexico 7-0 as one singles match was forfeited, but Gieselle Vlassis blanked Kim Heagerty 6-0, 6-0 as Grace Glowaki topped Mia Morris 6-2, 6-0.
The doubles teams of Grace Catalano-Aubrey Mills, Mary Kilmartin-Isabella Mead and Calista Albring-Maddie Tallman did not surrender a game in any of their matches. Grace Coyne and Grace DelPino won 6-1, 6-0 over Catrina Edwards and Destiny Teachout.
Jamesville-DeWitt claimed a 6-1 victory over Fulton last Monday as Tara Pollock won over Nora Kingsbury 6-0, 6-1, with Anna Sofia Hege shutting out Kelsey Rosenbarker 6-0, 6-0. Lily Fleet lost 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 to Ana Snyder.
The Red Rams won all four doubles points as Olivia DeHoog and Inika Gajra beating Katie Distin and Erin Waloven 6-2, 6-2. Olivia Frison DeAngelis and Lena Jones won 6-2, 6-1 over Shaylee Cealie and Abigail Cuyler.
Sophia Proe and Riya Sharma won over Katelyn Perkins and Hayley Vann by those same scores. Shannon Beaudry and Sydney Cline got a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ana Marroquin-Aguilar and Victoria Stoutenger.
Playing again on Thursday, J-D blanked Fulton 7-0, with Fleet beating Ana Snyder 6-4, 6-2 in the closest of the three singles matches. Frison DeAngelis took a singles turn and routed Shaylee Cealie 6-1, 6-0. Pollock handled Erin Waloven 6-0, 6-0, and the Rams had none of its four doubles teams give up less than two games in any set.
Manlius-Pebble Hill won last Monday over Phoenix 6-1, handling the singles matches as Parmees Fazeli beat Ashley Kenner-Carbonaro 6-0, 6-0, with Genevieve Morrow topping Katelyn Carbonaro 6-1, 6-1 and Sara Antonevich handling Mia Graham 6-3, 6-0.
In a three-set doubles battle, Emma Gross and Caroline Mezzalingua survived the last tie-breaker to beat Maryanne Barrington and Courtney Worden 6-1, 6-7, 7-6.
Ava Benedict and Grace Zhang lost in straight sets to Brielle DeRoberts and Morgan Kosakowski 6-3, 6-2, but Eva Englich and Eden Hildebrandt handled Ella Heckert and Mackenzie VanAuken 6-4, 6-2, while Kaeli and Katrina Ahn claimed a forfeit.
Another 6-1 victory followed over Jordan-Elbridge on Tuesday as MPH got singles sweeps from Fazeli, Morrow and Antonevich, none of them dropping more than three games in any single set.
It was more difficult in doubles, where the Eagles snared a point and nearly had another, only to see Gross and Zhang pair up to rally past Delaney Dunham and Megan Hatt 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Bishop Grimes won 7-0 over Pulaski last Tuesday as Katie Knittel handled Cassie McGregor 6-0, 6-0, with Michaela Marturano topping Madison Hanks 6-2, 6-0 and Kate Mathewson working past Holly Pacyon 6-4, 6-3.
The Cobras also had the doubles teams of Sarah Falgiatano- Abby Fletcher, Abby Wilkinson-Lenora Cedrone and Jenny Morabito-Samantha Burton each winning in two sets. Cedrone and Wilkinson had the closest call, but still won 6-3, 6-4 over Lauren Denny and Chyanna LaCelle.
Then Grimes got a 4-3 win over Mexico on Thursday as Marturano, Mathewson and Knittel each won their singles matches in straight sets. To get the decisive point in doubles, Cedrone and Wilkinson beat Caitlyn Hackett and Destiny Teachout 6-1, 7-5.
