Work for the Cazenovia boys golf team in its first fall campaign would conclude on Tuesday as it played in the Section III fall small-school tournament, conducted at Camillus Hills Golf Club.
Before that, though, Cazenovia still had plenty of matches to play, including last Tuesday’s trip to Skaneateles, where those other Lakers prevailed 230-237 largely due to its strength at the top.
It was just as close as the 233-239 decision Skaneateles claimed a month earlier at Cazenovia Country Club. Now, with the scene shifted to Skaneateles Country Club, Alex Moesch shot a 43, but Skaneateles teammates Ty Jones (39) and Ben Spinelli (41) topped him.
Cody Dickinson had a 45, finishing ahead of Max Beam’s 46 as Will Fitzgerald got a 50 and Ben Orbach a 53. Still, Skaneateles held on as Jack Canty produced a 46, with Shawn Luce contributing a 48. Jared Simmons’ 56 helped Skaneateles clinch it.
After a rain postponement, the Lakers were back on the course Friday against LaFayette and Tully, shooting 259, which was behind the Lancers’ 230 and the Black Knights’ 240.
Moesch shot a 39, with Chris Kelly getting a 48, the only other Cazenovia total under 50 as Dan Lines had a 56, just ahead of Aiden Kalteski (57) and Brady Begley (59).
Chittenango would also take part in the sectional tournament following a final week of the regular season where it had a chance to take the OHSL Liberty American division regular-season title, but could not quite pull it off.
The key match was last Tuesday’s battle between the Bears and Westhill, the top two teams in the standings, at Camillus Hills, where the Warriors, by a single shot, edged Chittenango 220-221.
Tyrus Kelly shot a 40, but that was four shots behind Westhill’s Anthony Maglisco, who had a 36. Brad Randall and Tyler Moscarito both had rounds of 42 for Chittenango to tie for third place as Tanner Smith shot 44 and Brendan Fraser had a 52.
All of this followed last Monday’s narrow 229-231 victory over Mexico at Emerald Crest. It helped the Bears that Kelly shot 38 and Randall posted a 42, the two lowest individual scores ahead of the Tigers’ Nate Burrows (44) and Logan Craig (45).
To hang on, Chittenango would need Moscarito and Smith to each shoot 48 and Fraser finish with a 53 to counteract Mexico’s Connor Revette (46), Lyle Trimble (47) and Ryan Mosher (49).
After the Westhill clash, the Bears rebounded Thursday by defeating Tully 222-236 at Rogues Roost, with Moscarito earning his first individual title of the season, tying Kelly as they both shot 40.
Steven Coffin paced the Black Knights with a 43, but Smith matched Tully’s Ryan Shute by earning a 45, and Chittenango pulled away behind a 48 from Randall and a 49 from Fraser.
