Even a successful regular season for the Baldwinsville girls tennis had a ceiling for its relative expectations.
For one thing, the Bees, like every other Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division side, had no chance to keep up with Fayetteville-Manlius, who handled B’ville 7-0 last Monday afternoon.
In singles, Lauren Devine lost to Phoebe 6-0, 6-1, with Brooke Tutor turned back by Katerina Atallah. Audrey Benton went a bit longer in the second set, but still fell to Phoebe Wang 6-1, 6-4.
Elizabeth Costanzo and Katrina Hays-Peterson had a 6-1, 6-2 doubles defeat to Ava Abruzzese and Samhitha Adavikolanu, with McKenna Murphy and Ella Tromblee falling to Maddy Drapeau, paired with Cassie Wojtasiewicz 6-0, 6-2.
Reagan Doan and Hanna Manning could not get a game from Rachel Liu and Martha Welker in a 6-0, 6-0 loss. Hannah Gould and Paige Tromblee lost to Alexis Ahn and Keara Polovick 6-1, 6-0.
Far more frustrating for the Bees was taking a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool last Thursday afternoon, even though Tutor took out Julia Schewe 6-2, 6-2 and Paige Tromblee beat Diana Kozenyatko 6-2, 7-5.
Gould, now paired with Benton, needed three sets to beat Aryanna Davila and Crystal Morgans 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, but two chances to get the clinching point fell just short.
Sarah Cavino rallied to get to a third set in her third singles match with Kelly Geiwitz, only to lose 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Also, Doan and Ella Tromblee led early, but were forced to a third-set tie-breaker and then lost to Eleni Ioannidis and Cindy Tran 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Eight teams made the Section III Class A team tournament, with B’ville the no.4 seed as it would host no. 5 seed Auburn in the quarterfinals early this week. Top seed Fayeteville-Manlius likely awaited in the semifinals.
