In the course of a week, the West Genesee boys golf team went from the top of the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division standings to the middle of the pack.
Three consecutive defeats had followed a 5-0 start, two of them to Fayetteville-Manlius, who again got the Wildcats 190-201 when they met last Monday at Woodcrest.
Five days earlier at Westvale, F-M had prevailed 189-194, but the rematch wasn’t as close.
Velton Perry shot a 36 for nine holes to lead the Hornets. Matt LaCombe produced a 37, while Mike Millimaci shot a 38. Adam Butch shot 39 and Jordan Krouse stepped up, too, posting a 40.
This skid for WG finally ended with a 180-203 win over Cicero-North Syracuse Green a day later at Westvale, with Nick Bove blazing to a 32 to take individual honors and Tim Dipaola adding a 34.
Despite a 37 from C-NS Green’s Brody Kennedy, the Wildcats pulled away thanks to the trio of Kevin McDermott, Joe Artini and Jack Gordon, each of whom shot 38, which for Artini and Gordon were season-best efforts.
Even better scores were issued on Friday in WG’s match against Liverpool, where it prevailed 182-187, getting a spectacular effort from Bove, who shot a five-under-par 31, two ahead of the 33 from the Warriors’ Spencer Baum.
Since Dipaola’s 36 was matched by Liverpool’s Tyler Leatherwood and one ahead of Sam Sgroi’s 37, the Wildcats needed McDermott and Peyton Mullane to both shoot 38 as Jacob Weaver got a 39, each of them ahead of the Warriors’ Luke Harder (40) and Pat Langlois (41).
At 7-3 in the SCAC Metro, WG was just behind Cicero-North Syracuse Blue (8-2), with F-M and Baldwinsville (7-2) between them, four teams battling for a league title, and it could come down to the Wildcats and Northstars on Wednesday afternoon.
Westhill, still trying to chase down CBA in the OHSL Liberty National division, faced Cazenovia on Tuesday afternoon and faced yet another setback, falling to the Lakers in a narrow 227-228 decision at Cazenovia Country Club.
At the top, Cazenovia’s Alex Moesch shot a 39 to beat the Warriors’ Anthony Maglisco, who had a 42. Try as it could, Westhill could not make up that slim deficit, though Andrew Corning shot a 44 and Max Beam had a 45.
Two days later taking on Mexico at Emerald Crest, Westhill prevailed 212-243, the match dominated by Maglisco’s under-par 34 that put him nine shots ahead of Luke Gilmartin’s 43.
Connor Revette led the Tigers with a 44, but James Hunt matched it for the Warriors as Michael Britt produced a 45 and Aidan Ryan contributed a 46 to help the Warriors pull away.
