Only Christian Brothers Academy was in front of the Skaneateles boys golf team in the OHSL Liberty National division standings as the Lakers took a 5-3 record into last week’s matches.
Up against Tully last Monday afternoon, the Lakers again got a low individual round from Ty Jones, but even that didn’t prevent a 242-248 defeat to the Black Knights.
Jones’ 40 at Skaneateles Country club was four shots ahead of Tully’s Logan Bedford, but it was Keith VanDyne’s 45 that helped push the Black Knights in front.
Jack Canty shot 48 and Ben Spinelli had a 49 for the Lakers, with Shawn Luce (55) just ahead of Will Cowden (56), but Tully held on with 50s from Ryan Shute and Tommy McKenna, plus a 53 from Steve Coffin.
The Lakers faced Chittenango on Wednesday, part of a three-team match with Phoenix. The Lakers’ total of 239 easily topped the Firebirds’ 287, but was two shots behind the Bears’ winning 237.
Spinelli was best among the Skaneateles golfers, his 42 one ahead of Jones’ 43, but each of them behind the 41 by Chittenango’s Tyrus Kelly. Luce had a 47, with Canty contributing a 50 and Jude Pas’cal managing a 57. The Bears held on with 46s from Brad Randall and Tyler Moscarito, a 51 from Maddox Garvey and 57 from Brendan Fraser.
Facing LaFayette two days later at SCC, the Lakers prevailed again, 239-253, to salvage a split of the week’s four matches.
Jones would shoot 38 in windy conditions to beat out the Lancers’ Thomas Long (40) at the top of the standings. Spinelli had a 47, just ahead of the Lancers’ Nelson Jones (48), while Canty got a 49 and Luce a 50 as Spencer Mack contributed a 55.
In the last week of the regular season, Skaneateles would take on Cazenovia, Mexico and CBA, all in a 48-hour span, with the Section III small-school fall tournament set for Oct. 2 at Camillus Hills Golf Club.
