The biggest news of the week for the Cazenovia boys cross country team was that its junior varsity team won its division during last Saturday’s 67th annual Baldwinsville Invitational.
With 65 points, the Lakers easily outdistanced runner-up Marcus Whitman’s total of 90 points as it had five of the top-20 finishers in the race, led by Mitchell Porter and Sean Smithers.
Porter was eighth in 19 minutes, 21 seconds, with Smithers ninth in 19:21.7. Ryan Hughes got 13th place in 19:31.8 as Chris Stevens made it to 17th place in 19:35.7.
When Torrin Monahan crossed the finish line in 19:35.9 to finish 18th, he clinched the Cazenovia victory as Isaac Walburger was right behind, finishing 19th in 19:36.4 as Ben McPherson was 24th in 19:58.6.
Up in the Varsity Small School division, Cazenovia placed 14th in a 35-team field, quickly showing its growth as sophomore Jared Smith was 52nd in the team standings with a time of 17:34 flat.
Noah DeRochie was 73rd in 17:55.6, with Jacob Ives posting 18:02.2. Stan Angus, in 18:03.2, was two spots behind Ives as Jake Buckley finished in 18:03.1 ahead of Zach Wendel (18:17.3) and Hunter McCullough (19:38.9).
Earlier in the week, Cazenovia faced Hannibal, taking a 22-33 defeat to the Warriors as DeRochie led the Lakers, his time of 18:05 third behind Hannibal teammates Patrick Hall (17:34) and Dillon Plantz (17:49). Smith was fifth, in 18:25, while Ives got seventh place in 18:44 and Wendel was eighth in 19:06.
