It gained a lot of attention when the Marcellus girls volleyball team upended defending Section III Class B champion Cazenovia on Sept. 6, but that took five sets.
Solvay took it even further, traveling to Buckley Gym last Wednesday night and, led by Allie Posnick and Myah Platler, pulled off a sweep of the Lakers by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.
Impressive from the outset, Solvay often turned to Posnick, who set the tone with nine aces, gathered up 17 assists and got 12 digs, her passes often going to Platler, who accumulated 12 kills.
Gianna D’Agostino and Genea Kadlubowski earned four kills apiece, while Jordan Bamba and Alexa Filicia proved terrific on the defensive side, Bamba getting 13 digs and Filicia adding 12 digs.
Before this, Solvay met Hannibal last Monday and won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19, nearly getting a sweep as it dropped the third set 26-24, but then finishing off the Warriors 25-16 in the fourth.
Posnick dazzled with 27 assists, nine aces, seven kills and four digs. Platler starred with 14 kills, six aces, three assists and four digs. Sophia Guadagnolo finished with seven aces and Filicia added four aces.
It was a perfect 3-0 week for the Bearcats thanks to Friday’s 25-8, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of Bishop Ludden, where Platler earned 10 kills and six aces as Posnick got 20 assists, four kills and four aces. Filicia managed 10 digs and Sophia Marotti got four kills.
Westhill met Oswego, a team Marcellus had beaten the week before. Unlike the Mustangs, though, the Warriors would sweep the Buccaneers last Monday night 25-14, 25-11, 25-22.
Sara Galante picked up 18 kills and added six aces, plus five digs. Mackenzie Martin earned 20 assists, to go with five kills, four aces, three blocks and two digs. Montanna Gedney contributed 10 kills as she and Giannai Militi had eight digs apiece.
During Thursday’s 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 romp over Homer, Westhill saw Martin earn eight aces, 14 assists, seven kills and six digs. Galante had 11 kills, four aces and got five digs. Gedney had eight kills, eight digs and three aces, with Schwartz earning 11 assists.
Marcellus, meanwhile, didn’t have a letdown after toppling Cazenovia, the Mustangs sweeping Phoenix 25-19, 25-10, 25-14.
Sydney French set a tone with four aces, adding five kills. Sarah Jeske also had five kills for the Mustangs and picked up a pair of blocks. Michaela Godbold managed three kills and three aces as Bronte Stahl finished with 14 assists.
Then, when the Mustangs faced Jamesville-DeWitt Friday night, it lost the second set 25-22 after winning the opener 25-19, but then put away the Red Rams 25-15 and 25-20 over the next two sets to win in four.
Stahl gained 12 assists, with Evelyn Webster earning 19 digs to lead the Marcellus defense. Elaine Grattan stepped up to earn six kills. French had nine digs to go with four kills and two aces.
Back home for its own tournament on Saturday, Marcellus reached the semifinals, where it lost to Liverpool. The Warriors went on to beat Cicero-North Syracuse in the championship round.
