The only way that the Fayetteville-Manlius boys golf team would reach the top of the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division standings was if it could topple defending sectional champion West Genesee.
And that’s exactly what happened last Wednesday as the Hornets went to Camillus and gave the 5-0 Wildcats its first defeat of the season, each shot important as F-M prevailed 189-194 at Westvale.
Consistency at the top was important to the Hornets, with Adam Butch, Velton Perry and Jordan Krouse each shooting 37 for nine holes, just behind the 36 from WG’s Nick Bove, and enough to withstand 39s from Connor Barry, Jack Gordon and Dan Benetti.
A day later, when the Wildcats lost to Baldwinsville, F-M, at 5-1, found itself alone atop the league standings, but knows that, to stay there, it would need to beat Baldwinsville this Thursday at Timber Banks, among other key matches.
Jamesville-DeWitt continued to show its own winning form as it ventured to Greenview last Wednesday and earned a 206-230 victory over Central Square to move to 5-0 on the season, keeping pace with East Syracuse Minoa Blue atop the SCAC Empire division standings.
Peter Hatton won a close individual race as he shot a 38, one ahead of Red Rams teammates Tanner Burns and Puntt Chittaralert. The Redhawks’ Adam Woodmansee also had a 39, but J-D pulled further away thanks to a 44 from Jake Ellithorpe and a 46 from Tyler Brang.
Against Cortland a day later, the Rams won again, 196-209, with three of the top four individual scores at Walden Oaks as Ellithorpe stepped up to shoot a 37, tying the Purple Tigers’ David Benjamin.
Turner Pomeroy shot a 38, as did Hatton, one shot behind Ellithorpe and Benjamin. Then, after Cortland’s Landon Rozewski posted a 40, Chittaralert and Max Schulman both shot 41 to help J-D clinch another win.
ESM Blue had faced Cortland the day before, prevailing 209-215 over the Purple Tigers in a tight match at Erie Village as ESM Orange finished with 284.
Though Rozewski shot 35, ESM Blue caught up with Dan Sitnik shooting a 41 as Luke Garlick and David Griffith both posted totals of 42.
In Friday’s match against Oswego, ESM Blue kept it up, prevailing 213-223 over the Buccaneers largely due to Ian Rivers returning to shoot a 37, six shots clear of the field.
Sitnik, with a 43, matched the low Oswego round by Chris Sugar, with Griffith and Joe Pacheco both posting 44 to equal the Bucs’ Ben Stevens and Gavin Neuland. Garlick clinched it with a 45 as Nate Powell shot 46.
Christian Brothers Academy was 6-0 before going to Camillus Country Club last Wednesday and, against Westhill, taking a 229-234 defeat to the Warriors.
Joe Nicholson shot a 41 to lead the Brothers, but Westhill’s Anthony Maglisco’s matched that total and two of his teammates were next as Michael Britt, with a 43, and Andrew Corning, with a 44, took the next two spots.
Then Aidan Ryan posted a 47 and James Hunt got a 49, enough to hold off the Brothers, who got 46s from Dan Angelo and Jack MacLachlan, a 48 from Brent Savage and a 49 from Mike Santoro.
Rebounding quickly, CBA won Thursday over LaFayette 213-247, Santoro’s 39 matching that of the Lancers’ Thomas Long as Peter Scuderi managed a 41, one ahead of Nicholson and Angelo. Ryan Wendt finished with a 49.
A close 237-241 win over Mexico followed on Friday as CBA’s top players rested. Bailey Taffner’s 45 matched that of the Tigers’ Connor Revette, with Harry McLain and James Stanton both shooting 47. Jack Little added a 48.
