Ever since the Skaneateles boys golf team had its Aug. 29 doubleheader where it won at Cazenovia in the morning and lost at Westhill in the afternoon, it had not played a match for nearly two weeks.
This was due to a schedule where the only two matches scheduled got postponed due to weather. On Sept. 5, the Lakers were set to face Mexico in its home opener at Skaneateles Country Club, but a heat index that climbed into triple digits postponed it.
Similarly, last Monday’s trip by Skaneateles to Rogues Roost to face Chittenango got rained out, so now the Lakers faced a three-day stretch where it would play twice.
It started last Tuesday against Phoenix, Skaneateles playing at Camillus Country Club and ripping past the Firebirds 255-311. Ty Jones shot a 37 for nine holes, with Ben Spinelli adding a 48 as Don Neiss and Josh VanGorder each led Phoenix, shooting 55 apiece.
And this led to Thursday’s clash with Westhill, who had not resembled the undefeated powerhouse that tore through the Onondaga High School League in 2017.
At Camillus Country Club, the Lakers lost, 226-244, with Jones’ 41 three shots behind the Warriors’ Anthony Maglisco. Spinelli had a 47, with Shawn Luce and Jack Canty each posting 49, but they trailed Westhill’s Aidan Ryan (45) and Michael Britt (46).
With an overall record of 5-3, Skaneateles would host Tully Monday and LaFayette on Friday, with a trip to Chittenango in between.
