Having toppled Cazenovia head-to-head late in August, the Chittenango boys golf team now sought to find a place near the top of the OHSL Liberty division standings.
Doing so required winning a rematch between the Bears and Lakers held last Wednesday at Rogues Roos – but it did not take place, postponed by a heat index that soared well above 100 degrees.
The Bears’ match with Westhill on Aug. 31 at Rogues Roost was a landmark as Chittenango toppled the Warriors 230-234, needing its depth behind Tyrus Kelly, whose 38 was one shot behind Westhill’s Anthony Maglisco (37) for individual honors.
Brad Randall got third place with a 43, three better than the 46 from the Warriors’ Michael Britt. Brendan Fraser’s 47 tied Westhill’s Aidan Ryan for fifth place, and the Bears clinched it with a 49 from Tanner Smith and a 53 from Maddox Garvey.
Cazenovia had taken a tough 231-232 defeat to LaFayette on Aug. 30 at Orchard Valley, the difference coming at the top where the Lancers’ Thomas Long shot 36 and the Lakers’ top individual, Alex Moesch, posted 40.
With a 46 from Nelson Jones and a 49 from Branden Pope, LaFayette held off the efforts of the Lakers despite Cody Dickinson shooting 46 and two others, Ben Orbach and Chris Kelly, managing 48.
Starting its September slate, Cazenovia (whose Aug. 24 match with Tully was moved to Sept. 26) met Phoenix on Friday and won big, ripping past the Firebirds 227-302.
Sweeping the top five spots, the Lakers were again led by Moesch, whose 39 was six shots ahead of Dickinson’s 45. Then Will Fitzgerald posted a 47, with Orbach and Max Beam sharing fourth place, each shooting 48.
Chittenango, at home that same day, lost to unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy 203-249, unable to get a round lower than the 46 that Kelly posted.
Randall and Smith both shot 50, with Fraser (51) and Tyler Moscarito (52) close behind. CBA had its own top-five sweep that included a 36 from Mike Santoro and a 39 from Joe Nicholson.
