Some matches remained for the Cazenovia and Chittenango boys tennis teams before the rush of the post-season this week that would include the Section III playoffs and state qualifier.
When the Lakers faced Bishop Grimes last Monday afternoon, some newer faces got court time, and none of them dropped a set in Cazenovia’s 5-0 shutout of the Cobras.
Adrian Castro and Carson Clonan played doubles, prevailing 6-4, 6-2 over Renny Breazeale and Jason Zhang, while Teddy Coughlin and Dan Gavilondo handled Harry Hu and Aiden Keenan 6-4, 6-1.
C.J. Monroe played singles for Cazenovia and worked past Sean Moran 6-0, 6-0, the same scores by which Mitch Romig beat Jeff Wang. Liam Flannery prevailed over Zed Weigand 6-2, 6-3.
That same day, Chittenango lost, 4-1, to Mexico, with another victory in doubles from Zach Falkenburg and Matt Lanphear as they toppled Eric Hyde and Connor Shaffer 6-3, 6-2.
Elsewhere ,though, the Tigers ruled as Griffen and Nate Smith lost, 6-2, 6-2, to Jacob Hill and Matt Shaw, with David Mullin, Sean Austin and Evan Edwards getting just one combined game in their six sets of singles play.
Cazenovia honored its seniors before last Wednesday’s regular-season finale against Mexico, and then went out and claimed a tough 3-2 decision over the Tigers.
Flannery ran into Mexico’s Evan Blunt and lost, 6-2, 6-2, but Mitch Romig survived a first-set tie-breaker to top John Ocker 7-6, 6-1 as Nate Romig handled Joe Ocker 6-0, 6-1.
The doubles matches were split, with Griffin Monahan and Jake Walburger taking a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 defeat to Jacob Hill and Matt Shaw, but Coughlin and Gavilondo prevailing over Eric Hyde and Connor Shaffer 6-4, 6-0.
It was close between Chittenango and Onondaga on Wednesday, but it went 3-2 in the Bears’ favor as the doubles teams of Falkenburg-Lanphear and Sean Austin-Ben Cyr did not drop a game in either of their matches.
Griffen Smith had a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 defeat to Jake Massaro in singles, while Edwards lost to Adam Wood 7-6, 6-1, but the clinching point came from Anthony Roberts, who handled Taylor Featherstone 6-0, 6-1.
Chittenango met up with CBA on Thursday, taking a 4-1 defeat, though both doubles matches were battles. Austin and Cyr beat Ayo Oguntola and Max Lewis 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, though Griffen and Nate Smith took a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 defeat to Hunter Burton and Will Holstein.
Falkenburg played singles and lost to Dean Vlassis 6-0, 6-1, with Lanphear falling to Ben Vlassis 6-0, 6-3 as Edwards had a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Shivam Nanavati.
