With neighborhood bragging rights and the Salt City Athletic Conference Empire division title at stake, the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa track and field teams went head-to-head last Wednesday afternoon.
J-D got the best of it on the girls side, prevailing 88-53 over ESM, though both sides were victorious over Central Square as the Red Rams prevailed 81-60 and the Spartans topped the Redhawks 76-65.
And it was the same in the boys meet, J-D proving too much for ESM 98-43, but the Red Rams lost, 76-65, to Central Square, who also defeated the Spartans 95-46.
The girls meet included yet another star turn by J-D’s Alexandria Payne, who won four events. Payne had a top long jump of 16 feet 5 inches, tore through the 100-meter hurdles in 15.38 seconds, went 1:01.9 in the 400-meter dash and capped it with a first-place 200-meter dash of 26.60 seconds.
Just as important to the Rams, Sophia Vinciguerra swept to wins in the 800-meter run in 2:33.8 and the 1,500-meter run in 5:23.5, also pairing with Amelia Gilbert, Grace Bridge and OliviaBudelmann to take the 4×800 relay in 10:42 flat.
ESM’s Sophie Hartz won the 100-meter dash in 13.55 seconds before helping Mackenzie Bourdon, Lashae Benjamin and Mia Montgomery claim the 4×100 relay in 51.59 seconds. Bourdon, Kat Boland, Kassandra Burr and Melanie DeFeo won the 4×400 relay in a clocking of 4:28.9.
Mackenzie Bourdon was first in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.5, with Montgomery going 35’11 ¼” to win again in the triple jump as Sara Bourdon threw the discus 82’3”.
J-D had Lana Wisniewski match Central Square’s Alondra Arroyo by clearing 8’3” in the pole vault as Mariah Williams threw the shot put 29 feet and Laetticia Bazile cleared 5’1” in the high jump.
Meanwhile, in the boys meet between J-D and ESM, the Red Rams’ David Fikhman swept the sprints, taking the 100 in 11.41 seconds, the 200 in 22.85 seconds and the 400 in 51.87 seconds.
Also, in the 4×400 relay, Fikhman, Fidel Martinez, Haberle Conlon and Nico Stella prevailed in 3:34.7 as ESM’s lone track win came from Myles Riggins, who took the 110 high hurdles in 16.45 seconds.
Central Square’s domination in distance races kept J-D or ESM from catching them, but the Rams still had Marcus Johnson go 40’10 ¼” in the triple jump and clear 5’10” in the high jump. The Spartans had Gavin Stevens unleash a discus throw of 142’5” and Gabe Holloman throw the shot put 48’6” as Ermin Alemic won the long jump, going 19’ ¾”.
Before that, the ESM boys had a three-team meet last Tuesday against Oswego and PSLA-Fowler and won them both with ease, defeating the Buccaneers 94-47 and the Falcons 124-18.
Nick Berg swept all three distance races, going four minutes, 53 seconds in the mile, and then taking the 800-meter run in 2:06.9 before roaring to first place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:54.7.
Re Khem el, in 18.2 seconds, held off Conner Hillman (18.6) in the 110 hurdles, but Hillman was victorious in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.2 as Tyler Nice took the 400-meter dash in 55.6 seconds. Bennett Ferrari won the pole vault by clearing 8’6”.
Hillman won again in the shot put with a toss of 47’6”. El returned in the triple jump, going 39 feet 2 ½ inches to beat out Alemic (37’1 ¾”), while Alemic won the long jump by going 19’ ½”. Emir Karic, second in the shot put, heaved the discus 110’3 ½” to edge out teammate Holloman (109’3”) for the top spot.
