On its way to another undefeated regular season, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team showed just how deep and talented it is during last Thursday’s 7-0 shutout of Liverpool.
Rohan Dhawan played first singles, defeating the Warriors’ Aaron Alejo 6-1, 6-1. And that was the closest match as David Fernando put away Anthony Puma 6-1, 6-0, with Max Farber-McEntee getting a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Devon Williams.
In doubles, Taran Judge and Riley Ma paired up to blank Caleb Arnold and Jeff Noll 6-0, 6-0. Combined, the teams of Joel Farella-Jeremy Zhang, Ben Farber-McEntee-Andy Sun and Victor Chen-Neil Khurana dropped just one game in six combined sets.
This followed a tough match last Tuesday against Baldwinsville where the Hornets won 6-1, but that was still an improvement upon the 5-2 win it had over the Bees late in April.
It was Michael Miller earning a big point in singles when he outlasted Eric Smith 4-6, 7-5, 10-6. This made up for Dhawan’s 6-4, 6-4 loss to Antonio Marsallo as Dilan Judge routed Hunter Dukat 6-0, 6-0.
F-M swept all four doubles matches, starting with Ma and Taran Judge blanking Dukat and Sam Damato 6-0, 6-0. Farella and Zhang beat Alex Taylor and Anthony Pompo by those same scores as Fernando and Max Farber-McEntee won, 6-2, 6-4, over Nick Licciardello and Max Funicello. Sun and Ben Farber-McEntee beat Jonathan Oad and Beckett Plumley.
Christian Brothers Academy took on Homer last Tuesday afternoon, leaning again on its dominant singles players to fight off the Trojans 3-2. Dean Vlassis won, 6-0, 6-0, over Vince Saraceno, and by those same scores Ben Vlassis handled Alex Cottrell while Shivam Nanavati got his own 6-0, 6-0 win over Nate Potter.
That made up for Homer winning both of the doubles matches. Hunter Burton and Max Lewis lost in three sets to Adam Brown and Sean Powers 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, while Will Holstein and Matt Potenza fell to Ben Herman and Spencer Rusyniak 6-1, 6-1.
A day later, CBA lost to Cazenovia by that same 3-2 margin, the difference a first singles match where Dean Vlassis was upended by the Lakers’ Nate Romig in a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
Ben Vlassis still beat Mitch Romig 6-0, 6-0, with Nanavati toppling Liam Flannery 6-0, 6-1. But Cazenovia won both doubles points as Lewis and Ayo Oguntola fell to Teddy Coughlin and Dan Gavilondo 6-4, 7-5, with Holstein and Potenza falling, 6-4, 6-2, to Aiden Kalteski and Griffin Monahan.
CBA won again Thursday, bashing Bishop Grimes 5-0. In single-set matches to eight games, Ben Vlassis beat Jason Zhang 8-0 and Dean Vlassis topped Jeff Wang by that same score as Nanavati beat Sean Moran 8-0.
They played the doubles matches to 10 games, but the results were the same, Holstein and Oguntola pairing up to beat Andrew Coleman and Harry Hu 10-3 as Hunter Burton and Max Lewis won, 10-1, over Reney Breazeale and Aiden Keenan.
On Friday, CBA put away Phoenix 5-0. Nanavati and the Vlassis brothers did not drop a game in their singles matches as Holstein and Potenza paired up to beat Ryan Lange and Sam Stellingwerf 6-4, 6-4, while Burton and Lewis won, 6-1, 6-4, over Ethan Listowski.
Manlius-Pebble Hill started its week by shutting out Onondaga 5-0. In singles, Dan Braverman handled Alex Wood 6-1, 6-0, while Dan Mezzalingua and Keerthi Martyn each won 6-0, 6-0 matches over, respectively, Taylor Featherstone and Jake Massaro.
Theo Ecbert-Budis and Matt Roberson got a shot in doubles and prevailed, 6-2, 6-3, over Sophia Featherstone and Nate Hay, with J.J. Braverman and Matt Fortner beating Michaela Germain and Paul Okhman 6-0, 6-2.
Another big win followed, MPH handling LaFayette 7-0 on Wednesday as Charlie Mann and Dan Braverman each won 6-0, 6-0 singles matches over, respectively, Brennen Thrall and Cole Shute, with J.J. Braverman blanking Molly Fitzpatrick 6-0, 6-0.
Mezzalingua dropped a game, but handled Taylor Tummino 6-0, 6-1, with the teams of Camden Ciotoli-Keerthi Martyn and Fortner-Matt Bush also getting shutouts as Ecbert-Budis and Roberson beat Nikolas Cromley and Hanna Pierce 6-2, 6-0.
On Friday, MPH had a 3-2 defeat to Homer, with Dan Braverman beating Ben Herman 6-3, 7-5 and Mezzalingua topping Alex Cottrell 6-3, 6-2. But the Trojans won both doubles points, including a three-set battle where Bush and Fortner lost, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, to Adam Brown and Sean Powers.
