Rough times continued for the Cazenovia and Chittenango baseball teams during the first full week of May.
When it hosted Jordan-Elbridge last Monday afternoon, the Lakers were held to a scant two hits in a 6-2 defeat to the Eagles.
Dylan Andreson and Ben Knutsen had those hits, with Knutsen also walking twice and scoring a run as Dylan McCrink got the other run. Judson Spaulding was credited with both RBIs.
J-E’s pitching tandem of Zach Fabrize (five innings) and Jordan Osborne (two innings) was responsible for the win, and they got two hits apiece at the plate as Geoff Lippa added two hits and two RBIs.
Things got worse on Thursday as Cazenovia got overwhelmed in a 22-4 defeat to Oneida. The Indians scored 10 runs in the second inning and six runs in the fifth as Laker pitchers allowed 13 hits and 11 walks, hurt by four errors.
As for Chittenango, it never recovered from a rough start in last Monday’s 10-3 defeat to Marcellus. The Mustangs chased Bears starter Devon Spaulding by netting five runs in the first inning and three runs in the second.
Jacob Burgan, Noah Schnauffer and Joe Mosack all had solid relief stints, but Chittenango had just five hits as Burgan and Schnauffer both scored runs, as did Zach Jasmin.
A day later, the Bears were hosting Phoenix and took a 13-3 defeat to the Firebirds, not getting on the board until the fifth inning, by which point Phoenix led 7-0 on the strength of two runs in the first and a five-run outburst in the top of the fourth.
Schnauffer took the loss, lasting 3 2/3 innings before Burgan and Mosack saw relief duty. Mosack also picked up three hits and got two RBIs, with Burgan and Zach Jasmin earning two hits apiece. Josh Sutlife led Phoenix with three hits and five RBIs
At least in those two games, the Bears had some production – unlike Thursday’s 10-0 loss to CBA, who saw pitching ace Mike McCully earn a six-inning perfect game, retiring all 18 batters he faced, 11 through strikeouts.
Cazenovia got some hits on Saturday against red-hot Skaneateles, but surrendered twice as many runs in a 20-4 defeat, the sixth Skaneateles win in as many days as the host Lakers will try to turn around in the last week of the regular season against Mexico, Hannibal, CBA and Phoenix.
