When they went head-to-head again last Wednesday afternoon, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys tennis team again defeated its neighbors from East Syracuse Minoa, the Red Rams prevailing 5-1 over the Spartans.
In lopsided singles matches, Peter Hatton beat Kelvin Cheng 6-0, 6-0, with Aniket Maini topping David Demazure 6-0, 6-1. But ESM earned the other point when Jack Satterly, in three sets, topped Anthony Pitts 6-1, 4-6, 10-4.
The doubles sweep for J-D included a tough match where Wes Sharlow and Lear Wang worked past Justin Cesarini and Jake Harrig 7-6, 7-5. Essex Glowaki and Dhruv Nanavati blanked Bryant Pham and Dan Rivers 6-0, 6-0 as Somil Aggarwal and Mark Bratslavsky prevailed, 6-0, 6-3, over Ben Houseman and Jason Schad.
J-D also won last Monday, sweeping Auburn 7-0. Eric Benaroch preserved the Red Rams’ shutout in second singles when he outlasted the Maroons’ William Clark 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.
William Guisbond handled Jacob Wansor 6-3, 7-6, with Mike Bratslavsky beating Zach Moore 6-3, 6-2 and Hatton routing Scott Minnoe 6-1, 6-0. J-D’s doubles teams of Glowaki-Nanavati, Aggarwal-Mark Bratslavsky and Sharlow-Wang lost just six games in six combined sets of singles play.
From there, J-D went on to beat Central Square 6-1 on Tuesday, launched by Hatton’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Logan Foster as Guisbond beat Austin Grosso 6-2, 6-1 and Aniket Maini handled Michael Haywood 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Glowaki and Nanavati blanked Edwin Ogren and Ethan Westfall 6-0, 6-0, just as Aggarwal and Mark Bratslavsky beat Jacob Kloter and Jared Smith 6-1, 6-1. Sharlow and Wang got a 6-4, 7-5 win over Lukas Capstraw and Spencer Wells.
ESM lost 7-0 to West Genesee on April 27. What followed, last Monday, was ESM getting points against Cortland, yet still losing 5-2 to the Purple Tigers.
Houseman and Schad teamed up to beat Ben Andrews and Trevor Jubran 6-2, 7-5, with Demazure and John Kipping getting past Connor Holl and Aaron Hughes 6-4, 6-2.
Cortland claimed the other two doubles matches and all the points in singles, with only one of the matches going to three sets as Cesarini’s early lead got away in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Nick Djafari. Satterly lost, 6-4, 6-4, to Jon Frederick.
Right after facing J-D, ESM had a battle with Central Square on Thursday where it lost, 4-3, despite sweeping the doubles against the Redhawks.
Pham and Houseman prevailed, 6-4, 6-4, over Ogren and Smith, with Demazure and Rivers handling Michael Haywood and Gabe Peters 6-4, 6-1 as Harrig and Tom Kipping beat Tom Urthaler and Skyler Williams 6-4, 7-5.
With a chance at the clinching point in singles, Cheng went to three sets with Westfall, but lost, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, as Slatterly, Schad and John Kipping all took two-set defeats.
J-D, meanwhile, beat Fulton 5-2, with Hatton topping Ryan Lalik 6-2, 6-4 as Nanavati went to singles to beat Anthony Salerno 6-2, 6-4 and Glowaki handling Robert Salerno 6-0, 6-1.
Sharlow and Wang routed Kyle Hotaling and Jon Simpson 6-1, 6-1 in doubles as, in three sets, Aggarwal and Mark Bratslavsky rallied to beat Aniket Maini and Anthony Pitts 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Bishop Grimes fell to Mexico 5-0 last Tuesday, unable to gain a game in any of the three singles matches. In doubles, the Cobras’ Harry Hu and Zed Weigand, did a bit better, yet still lost, 7-5, 6-2, to Connor Shafer and Matt Shaw.
