Having climbed to no. 4 in the first state Class D rankings of the season, the Westhill girls lacrosse team did not find it too difficult to stay on that perch.
The Warriors handled Chittenango 18-4 last Tuesday night, bolting out to an 11-1 lead by halftime as Reilly Geer and Rebecca Gilhooley led the way.
Geer had a season-best six goals, the passes often coming from Gilhooley, who had six assists as she also scored twice. Gianna Zerillo emerged with a three-goal hat trick, adding three assists as Maura McAnaney also had a three-goal hat trick. Caroline Miller and Katelyn Karleski each got two goals, Miller adding an assist.
Marcellus (no. 7 in the state Class D rankings) made it back-to-back wins following that April 26 defeat to Westhill, handling Whitesboro and then, in last Monday’s contest with Mexico, shutting out the Tigers 17-0.
Taking 34 shots to Mexico’s three, the Mustangs (9-3) featured a balanced attack where Lily Powell led with four goals, but Katherine Locastro (three goals, three assists) and Katy Wangsness (two goals, four assists) shared point honors.
Madison Green scored twice, also getting three assists as Taylor Reich and Natalie Clere had their own two-goal outings. Anna Vetsch had one goal and one assist as Kenai Cameron also converted and Lily Locastro earned an assist.
Westhill took its turn against Mexico Thursday and won 22-2, with hat tricks from four different players, led by Zerillo and Gilhooley, who each produced four goals and three assists.
Miller scored five times, plus one assist, as Geer managed three goals and one assist. McAnaney had two goals and one assist, with Katherine McPeak getting a goal and two assists. Kendra MacCaull had one goal and one assist.
Not to be outdone, Marcellus played that night and scored more goals against Jordan-Elbridge, prevailing 24-7, with Powell and Katherine Locastro each getting six goals and Vetsch adding four goals, plus two assists.
Green, Hutchings and Lily Locastro each found the net twice, with Reich and Maisie Moses getting single goals. On J-E’s side, Gabby Gunnip netted two goals as single tallies went to Alexis Braun, Delaney Dunham, Katie Goodrich, Allison Jennings and Sophia Titus, with Jennings and Dunham each getting two assists.
J-E had returned to action last Monday against Christian Brothers Academy, unable to keep pace with the Brothers in a 21-7 defeat.
Goodrich had three goals and one assist, with Braun getting a goal and two assists. Jennings had one goal and one assist as Delaney Dunham and Gunnip also converted. CBA got six goals and two assists from Olivia Penoyer, plus five goals and two assists from Grace Hulslander.
Then J-E dealt with Mexico on Tuesday and had a far happier outcome, the Eagles defeating the Tigers 15-10 as it earned most of its margin in the first half and then held on late.
Goodrich, with three goals and four assists, anchored the Eagles as Braun scored four times and Gunnip got three goals, plus an assist. Chelsea Curtis had two goals as Jennings earned a goal and assist. Dunham and Sophia Titus also found the net.
When J-E took on Skaneateles Friday, it was the team’s fourth game in five days and it lost, 18-8, to the Lakers, Braun and Curtis both had two goals, with Goodrich adding a goal and two assists. Gunnip and Jennings each had one goal and one assist. Titus also scored as Riley Brogan (six goals, one assist) and Olivia Navaroli (five goals, one assist) paced Skaneateles.
Bishop Ludden/Grimes/Onondaga lost a close 13-12 decision to Clinton last Wednesday as it could not quite overcome the Warriors’ 6-4 halftime advantage despite Emma Driscoll’s six goals and one assist.
Emily Monroe scored three times, with Gabby Oswald getting two goals. Rhonee Shea Pal had one goal and one assist as Chenzie Diglio and Julia Wachna each got two assists. Peyton Hall made 10 saves, but Clinton goalie Elizabeth Militello got 14 saves as Elyse Jackson (four goals, three assists) and Sarah Owens (four goals, two assists) led them.
In Saturday’s 13-10 defeat to Tully, Ludden/Grimes/OCS could not quite overcome an 8-5 halftime deficit, despite four goals from Oswald. Driscoll was held to one goal and one assist as Shea Pal had a goal and two assists, with Alyssa Myer scoring twice. The other goals went to Diglio and Monroe
