Against most of its Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division foes, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team has proven quite successful, and even the top sides have reason to worry about the Bees.
Back on April 27, B’ville went up against perennial league champion Fayetteville-Manlius and picked up some points, but not enough to topple the Hornets, who prevailed 5-2.
Both of those points came in doubles, where Hunter Dukat first paired with Eric Smith to beat Neil Khurana and Cary Qian 6-1, 6-1, with Dukat then joining Beckett Plumley to beat Andrew Li and Davin Woolridge 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Elsewhere in doubles, Anthony Pompo and Alex Taylor fell to Dilan Judge and Rahul Reddy 6-3, 6-2, with Sam Damato and Alex Shaban taking a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Rohan Dhawan and Joel Farrella. In the closest of the three singles matches, Antonio Marsallo lost, 6-2, 6-1 to F-M’s Riley Ma.
B’ville gained plenty of encouragement from that match and applied it to last Monday’s contest against Liverpool, easily defeating the Warriors 6-1.
Damato and Shaban started a doubles sweep, topping Andrew Johnson and Devon White 6-0, 6-1, with Pompo and Taylor topping Caleb Munski and Fillipo Valenti 6-4, 6-2.
Diego Aguirre and Eric Smith paired up to handle Brayden Cabrey and Jeff Noll 6-2, 6-0, while Plumley teamed with Jonathan Oad for a 6-1, 6-0 win over Caleb Arnold and Jon Kline.
Up in singles, Nick Licciardello had a second-set shutout, yet still lost to Aaron Alejo 6-3, 0-6, 6-4. But B’ville recovered by having Max Funicello beat Anthony Puma 6-2, 6-2 and Marsallo shut out Brandon Davis 6-0, 6-0.
Maintaining that momentum, B’ville took on West Genesee a day later and swept all the double matches on the way to a 5-2 victory over the Wildcats.
Oad and Plumley got that started, topping WG’s Anthony DiLorenzo and Carter McCrea 6-2, 6-4, with Pompon and Taylor holding off Ryan Joyce and Erik Shanahan 7-5, 6-3.
In three sets, Aguirre and Smith beat Max Mekker and Michael White 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, just as Damato and Shaban rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Stefan Atanasov and John Northrop.
Though Licciardello lost in singles to Matt Manarra 6-1, 6-0, and Funicello had a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 defeat to Noah Ruston, Marsallo gained a singles point when he routed James Plunkett 6-1, 6-2.
