A mere 24 hours after practicing in yet another April snowstorm, the West Genesee track and field teams dealt with better conditions – namely, it wasn’t snowing – while hosting a three-way meet against host Baldwinsville and Cicero-North Syracuse.
Each of the contests was close, but the Wildcats could not win any of them, the WG girls taking a 71-70 defeat to the Northstars and a 74-66 loss to the Bees.
WG still claimed two of the three girls relays. Carly Benson, Abby Kuppinger, Kelsey Fox and Emily Young tore to a time of four minutes, 22.97 seconds in the 4×400, with Fox joining Caitlin Mills, S Gardino and Amina Mambambu to take the 4×100 in 52.63 seconds.
On her own, Young won the 1,500-meter run in 4:50.13, with Benson following up as she covered 800 meters in 2:27.26. Kuppinger beat the field in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.98 as B’ville’s Adrianna Straughter won the 100 hurdles, long jump and high jump.
Moving to the boys meet, West Genesee would not get as close against either of the two sides, falling 97-44 to C-NS and 101-49 to Baldwinsville.
Here, the Bees and Northstars won each individual event, with B’ville getting two titles from Cameron Majchrzak in the shot put (43’5”) and discus (121’9”), while C-NS had Jalen Williams win the 100 sprint in 11.33 seconds and the 110 high hurdles in 15.18 seconds.
Though most of the other area meets were postponed, Solvay did have its girls track team take part in Saturday’s Tully Invitational, where Ashley Bosco won the shot put with a toss of 40 feet ¾ inch.
The Bearcats had Jordyn Willsey, Kat Skellington, Haley Muehl and Serenity Thomas finish second in the 4×400 relay, going 4:49.82. Thomas, on her own, got second place in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.91, just behind South Jefferson’s Marlena Jacobs (1:12.90).
Bosco also was third in the discus, heaving it 89’10” as Shareese Pierce was fifth with 69’8”. Sabrina Garnett was third in the shot put with a top toss of 28’9 ¾”. Rhiannon Ackerman tied for sixth in the long jump, with Erica Bagozzi sixth in the pole vault.
