Just like so many others, the Baldwinsville softball team had to endure a week where there was more snow on the ground than games taking place.
The Bees were snowed last Tuesday at West Genesee, and will hope to make up that game on Wednesday as part of a busy school break that also includes scheduled contests against defending Section III Class AA champion Cicero-North Syracuse and Oneida.
But at least it cleared out in time for B’ville to take on Rome Free Academy last Saturday afternoon, which turned into a tense, tight game that the Bees pulled out, edging the Black Knights 6-5.
B’ville went in front 3-0 with two runs in the first inning and another run in the second. After an exchange of third-inning runs, the Bees saw RFA break out for four runs in the top of the fourth.
Now trailing 5-4, B’ville quickly gained the lead back, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth. Then it saw Brittany Cole pitch three shutout innings of relief to protect that slim margin after Kayla Young started.
Aside from her six strikeouts and two hits allowed, Young also doubled and drove in a run. Chloe Branshaw had a single, double and three RBIs as Madelyn Shuler and Claire McAllister had one RBI apiece. Kaycee Hawk had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
