It says a lot about the Baldwinsville baseball team that it did not let the lingering April chill affect things too much.
To be sure, the Bees had to sit through last week as snow altered the schedule and limited the ability to go outside, but once the sun returned, B’ville was ready.
On Saturday, two games were scheduled at home, with the Bees hosting Syracuse City and then Fayetteville-Manlius. The Bees would win both of these games, giving up just one run in those contests and improving to 4-0 overall.
Syracuse went first, and it turned into a terrific pitcher’s duel between Jason Savocool and Jed Boyle, but Savocool got the best of it with some late help that led to a 1-0 win.
For five innings, neither pitcher allowed a run. Savocool was on his way to an 11-strikeout effort that helped him overcome four hits and three walks, but Boyle was matching him.
Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, Cam Williams, who singled, doubled and tripled in this game, got on base and raced home with the go-ahead run. In fact, Williams owned three of the Bees’ four hits, with Nate Ray getting the other.
F-M arrived a few hours later, and while Jack Andres could not quite match Savocool’s complete-game shutout, he still went all seven innings to put away the Hornets 5-1.
In the top of the first, Isaac Blanford drove home Mitch Seabury, giving F-M a 1-0 lead. That was all Andres would allow as he limited the Hornets to three hits and struck out nine, surrendering just one walk.
The run support came in the bottom of the third, B’ville picking up four runs against Hornets starter Peter Miller. Savacool recorded a home run as Matt Mercurio had two hits and an RBI, with Lucas Robinson and Jacob Marshall also driving in runs. Williams, Pat May, Frank Levanti and Trey Blasi each scored once.
If the weather holds this week, B’ville would play four times in as many days, from a rematch with F-M to encounters with Cicero-North Syracuse, Corning and Rome Free Academy.
