After a second close win by the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team over Liverpool in the Jan. 20 Section III Dual Meet, both sides were quite busy in the aftermath.
Just two days later, the Northstars were competing in the Phoenix Mid-Winter Tournament, rescheduled from earlier in the month, with Dario Ciciarelli (106 pounds) and Julian Zavaglia (182 pounds) each earning titles.
Ciciarelli beat Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA’s David BeSeth 3-1 in the title bout at 106, while in the finals at 182 Zavaglia pinned Canastota’s Brandon Otis midway through the second period.
Jake Sorensen reached the 99-pound final but got pinned by Copenhagen’s David Petrie as Eric Salenski, in the 170-pound title bout, lost when Phoenix’s Ross McFarland pinned him.
Adam Brown beat Ethan Harley (Phoenix) 4-0 to finish third at 140 pounds, with Jack McDonald third at 195 pounds after a 4-3 win over General Brown’s Patrick Koelmel.
Jacob Montminy (120 pounds), Eric Salenski (126 pounds), Shane MacDonald (132 pounds), Antonio Napolitano (170 pounds) and Brady Ramos (285 pounds) each had fourth-place finishes.
Also, Dan Sweeney gained fifth place at 106 pounds, a mark shared by Isiah Wadan as he beat teammate Jeff St. Denny 3-0 for that spot at 145 pounds and Jacob Nobles was fifth at 152 pounds. Jeremiah Wahdan was sixth at 120 pounds.
Liverpool wrestled again last Tuesday night, defeating Oswego 72-18. Few of the bouts were contested, but it included Anthony Piscatelli, at 160 pounds, pinning Tyler Davis in 80 seconds as Lochlan Fegley (285 pounds) pinned Dakota Sinclair.
A short-handed Buccaneers roster meant that the Warriors gained nine forfeits to Jacob Ianno (120), Charlie Tran (126), Steve Pascarella (132), Jeremiah Paulson (140), Kenny Haugabook (145), Ron Cyr (170 pounds), Hayley Delia (99), Corey Okun (106) and Jeremy Ianno (113 pounds).
On Friday night, Liverpool hosted New Hartford and pushed past the Spartans 60-21, benefiting from seven different forfeits, but also getting some mat wins.
In the first contested bout at 106, Okun won an 11-6 decision over Oscanio Swartz, with Pascarella defeating Nikita Mikhalevich 11-4. Ianno pinned Billy Winn as Haugabook got a pin over Matt Pietryka.
And it all points to this Saturday’s Section III Class AA championships at West Genesee, where berths in the Feb. 10 sectional Division I meet at SRC Arena are on the line.
