A busy week for the West Genesee boys swim team would culminate with a tough meet Friday against another traditional power, Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA, where the Wildcats took a 96-84 defeat to the Red Rams.
Of the first five events, WG only prevailed in one of them thanks to Matt Shoults, who covered the 200-yard freestyle in one minute, 56.52 second as Ryan McMahon finished third in 1:59.94.
Later in the meet, Shoults, in 51.85 seconds, would pull away from J-D/CBA’s Conlan Rourke (53.71) to prevail in the 100 freestyle. Zac Zoanetti edged the Rams’ Spencer Schulz, 1:06.35 to 1:06.89, in the 100 breaststroke.
WG only prevailed in one of the three relays as Shoults, McMahon, Keegan Scharoun and Matt Shields went 3:46 flat in the 400 freestyle relay. In the 200 freestyle relay, Shoults, Alex Shuron, James Raymonda and Tiernan Guy posted 1:41.23 to J-D/CBA’s 1:39.59 as Zoanetti, Guy, Scharoun and Shuron were second (1:54.37) in the 200 medey relay.
Shuron got second place in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.67 and also was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.59, while Scharoun went 25.02 seconds for a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle. For J-D/CBA, Chris Bushnell won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.
Three nights earlier, WG went to Oswego, where it more than doubled the Buccaneers’ point total in a 121-58 romp started when Shuron, McMahon, Raymonda and Jack McManus took the 200 medley relay in 2:02.61.
Zoanetti needed 1:07.53 to hold off McMahon (1:09.54) in the 100 butterfly, with Schauron taking the 200 IM in 2:25.14. Elijah Tucker won the 500 freestyle as Mike Whitney took the 100 backstroke in 1:06.62.
Justin Byrne, with 236.85 points, beat out David Puma (201.23 points) in the diving event, right before Nate Long, in 26.66 seconds, pulled away from Chase Forseti (27.95) and Josh Goshow (27.99) in the 50 freestyle.
A good 200 freestyle relay battle between two sides saw Shuron, Schauron, Guy and Jack Iles finish in 1:42.28, just ahead of Raymonda, Zoanetti, Connor Macko and Matt Barrington, who got 1:42.68.
Once WG finished Tuesday’s meet against Pulaski-Sandy Creek, it would go into two weeks of preparations for the Feb. 14-15 Section III Class A championships at Nottingham.
