Though they had to wait a couple of weeks for it, the Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA and Fayetteville-Manlius boys swim teams would encounter each other last Tuesday night in a head-to-head meet at Cazenovia College.
Ultimately, the Red Rams proved too deep and strong, prevailing 106-80 as the neighboring schools raced one another a mere 72 hours after doing so as part of the Jan. 20 Salt City Athletic Conference meet at Nottingham.
J-D/CBA gained the point lead from the outset as it went 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Spencer Schultz, Connor Farchione, David Chen and Conlan Rourke posted one minute, 49.10 seconds.
Each of the next five events also went in the Rams’ favor, starting in the 200 freestyle, where Chris Bushnell prevailed in 1:53.70 as Schultz would take the 200 individual medley in 2:07.58.
Farchione got his turn winning the 50 freestyle in 24.19 seconds and added a 100 butterfly victory in 59.40 seconds. Lucas Dekaney, with 244.65 points, held off Evan Blust (239.85 points) in a close diving competition.
More J-D/CBA wins came later in the meet, starting with Nathan Chen going 5:38.67 in the 500 freestyle to edge F-M’s Richard Wan (5:38.71) by four-hundredths of a second.
And it continued with Schultz winning the 100 backstroke in 1:00.06 as David Chen, in 1:07.04, beat Nathan Chen (1:10.60) and Bushnell (1:11.62) in the 100 breaststroke.
To complete a relay sweep, the Rams had Bushnell, Farchione, Rourke and Kaleel Boykins go 1:38.18 in the 200 freestyle relay before Bushnell joined Schultz, Liam Kaplan and Peter Hatton to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:45.99.
F-M’s lone win came in the 100 freestyle, where Tanner Eisenhut finished in 52.44 seconds, well clear of Rourke (54.20) as the Hornets’ Nate Montgomery was third in 54.54 seconds.
Eisenhut was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.29, with Wan second in the 200 IM (2:21.31) and Nate Montgomery second in the 50 freestyle in 24.67 seconds. Tristan Wellner took second in the100 butterfly (1:04.40) and Jordan Krouse was second in the 100 backstroke in a clocking of 1:06.80.
Of the three relays, F-M did best in the 200 free as Wellner, Isaiah Haywood, Michael Arajuo and Lucas Wieres were second in 1:42.01, just ahead of Eisenhut, Wan, Montgomery and Alex Mihala, who finished in 1:42.60.
F-M would return to action Thursday night and defeat New Hartford 97-84, led by Eisenhut, who went 2:09.76 to win the 200 IM and then pulled away to win the 100 freestyle in 52.04 seconds.
Araujo, in 2:05.70, won the 200 freestyle as part of a 1-2-3 sweep with Krouse (2:10.81) and Miguel Aldana (2:10.92). Wellner won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.86 as Wieres, in 1:05.61, beat Wan (1:09.10) in the 100 backstroke. Chris Ziobro swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.42.
Wellner, Krouse, Ziobro and Nico Foster won the 200 medley relay in 1:56.39 as Foster, Araujo, Wellner and Haywood claimed the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.52. Eisenhut, Montgomery, Wan and Araujo went 3:52.70 in the 400 freestyle relay
J-D/CBA swam again on Friday against West Genesee, and again found the win column, toppling the Wildcats 96-84 to improve its record to 8-1-1 overall.
Bushnell, in 54.93 seconds, held off Farchione (56.62) in the 100 backstroke, while also winning the 200 IM in 2:09.20 as Farchione did take the 50 freestyle in 23.67 seconds. Rourke, Schultz, Boykins and Kaplan won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.59.
Schultz tore through the 100 butterfly in 55.61 seconds, also helping Bushnell and the Chen brothers go 1:46.45 in the 200 medley relay. Connor Ball won the 500 freestyle (5:59.23).
Evans earned 276.90 points in diving to beat out Dekaney’s 270.15 points, and that pair dueled again Saturday in the Dennis Burgos Memorial Diving Invitational, with Evans getting 457.40 points to beat out Dekaney, who was second in 423.75 points.
