When it registered back-to-back wins over Clinton in a home-and-home series on Jan. 19 and 20, it appeared that the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team was finding its top form again.
But when the Lakers traveled north to take on Alexandria Bay last Wednesday night, it could not get going as the Islanders beat them 4-1 to climb to the top of the Section III standings.
Back when they met in the Nov. 29 season opener, Skaneateles won 4-0, but two months later everything turned around as Alex Bay seized control following a scoreless first period.
Sophia Burns did net a second-period goal, assisted by Ioanna Christou, but otherwise all of the Lakers’ attempts were turned away as Islanders goalie Jenna Christopher was sensational, stopping 37 of the 38 shots she faced.
Inspired by Christopher’s effort, Alex Bay seized a 2-1 lead in the second period and pulled away with a pair of late goals. Iliana Smith scored twice, with Lydia Cantwell getting a goal and assist. Elly Gamble had the other goal and Saige Storino got two assists.
This week will bring forth the Section III playoffs, where the Lakers will seek to defend its title and then advance to the Feb. 9-10 state “Frozen Four” at Oswego State’s Marano Campus Center.
