For the third time in her career, East Syracuse Minoa girls bowler Haley Youker reached perfection.
Youker did so during last Tuesday’s match against Oswego at Lighthouse Lanes, where the main story in the Spartans’ 3-0 victory was seeing Youker pull off the best series of the Section III campaign.
It began with an opening game where Youker reeled off 11 consecutive strikes. When the 12th ball crashed through the pocket and all 10 pins fell, Youker had her 300 game.
And it didn’t stop there. A 197 second game preceded a third game where, after an initital spare, Youker finished with another string of 11 strikes in a row for a 290 that led to a three-game total of 787.
It was the second time in as many seasons that Youker, a senior headed for Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee, reached 300 in a match for ESM, having done so in January 2017 on the same day as Spartans boys bowler Hunter Borkowski at Strike-N-Spare Lanes in a sweep of Christian Brothers Academy.
The match against Oswego also included a 509 series for Kathleen Bayly and a 504 series from Elizabeth D’Agostino. The Buccaneers’ Kaitlyn Grant had nine straight strikes in a 267 game as part of her 626 set.
Meanwhile, in the ESM boys team’s 3-0 shutout of Oswego, no one was perfect, but Brett Smith’s 248 game did lead to a 624 set as Ryan MacCombie, who recorded a school-record 854 series against Auburn the week before, had a 598 set this time. Eric Carson gave the Bucs a 712 series and 255 high game.
Youker continued to put up big numbers in Friday’s 3-0 win by the girls Spartans over Central Square. At Green Acres, Youker earned a 708 series, her third straight 700-plus effort, with a high game of 258 as America Carhart got a 199 game in her 523 series and Stephanie Malson contributed a 513 series.
ESM’s boys had a closer match with Central Square, but beat the Redhawks 2-1 as MacCombie again led his side with a 578 series and Borkowski contributed a 554 series, with Sean Timmons getting a 235 game. Ryan Preston gave Central Square a 682 series with a 253 high game as Dimitri Queior added a 626 series.
Fayetteville-Manlius took on Baldwinsville last Tuesday at B’ville Sports Bowl, with the boys Hornets taking a 3-0 defeat to the same Bees side it beat five days earlier at Green Lakes.
John Buonfiglio did have a 615 series and 217 high game, with Kevin Winschel (522 series) just ahead of Isaac Blanford (520 series), but four Bees beat those totals, led by Jarod Napiorkowski, whose 675 series included a 267 high game. Tanner Rozycko and Chris Forbes each had 659 series and Tanner Mento got a 609 series.
In the girls match, F-M lost, 2-1, to B’ville, as Haillie Clark led with a 372 series. Lydia Chase (365 series) and Rachel Hance (355 series) were close behind, but none got close to the 535 series from the Bees’ Brooke Flask or the 511 series from Flask’s teammate, Amelia Ponto.
F-M went to Solvay Recreation Alleys Thursday to face West Genesee, and won both ends of that match by 2-1 margins.
Buonfiglio figured out the Solvay lanes in a 253 game on his way to a 639 series. Adam Koss (528 series) helped out, as did Jackson Arment, who had a 502 series. WG’s Ben Conroy bowled a 279 game, but only could manage a 585 series.
Moving to the girls side, Shelby Minor led F-M with a 426 series. Close behind her, Julianna Buonfiglio had a 422 set, followed by Francesca Femia (415 series) as Hance had a 404 series and Clark shot a 169 game in her 398 set. WG’s Gabrielle Gardner led all individuals with a three-game total of 455.
CBA bowled on Thursday against Solvay at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, with the boys winning a 5-2 decision over the Bearcats.
Vincent Carno broke out for a 257 game on his way to a 601 series. Matt Potenza had a 525 series (207 game) and Nate Vault’s 202 game led to a 513 set as Solvay got a 543 series and 228 high game from Zach Masha, plus a 524 series from Nate McLaughlin.
Anna Ziemba had a 413 series for the CBA girls in a 7-0 defeat to Solvay, who sits in first place in the Onondaga High School League standings. Jiselle Cabezas got a 388 series and high game of 171 as Christina Williams contributed a 377 series.
