Not content with getting a dramatic win over its neighbors from Cazenovia, the Chittenango girls basketball team sought more success in the week that followed.
In its first game since that Jan. 11 win over the Lakers, the Bears met the combined ITC/Fowler side and prevailed 56-29, with Ally Shoemaker notching 12 points to go with eight assists, six steals and three rebounds.
Emily Moon also had 12 points, adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Giulianna Farr had nine points, with Cassidy Kelly getting eight points and five rebounds. Mekenzie Dahlin had eight points and four assists.
Together, they all helped the Bears outscore ITC/Fowler in every quarter, including a 28-13 second-half push even after it established a comfortable lead.
With a win at Phoenix on Friday, the Bears could climb to the .500 mark at 7-7, and it did so, edging the Firebirds 42-40 in a game where it held Phoenix without a point during the second quarter.
That helped overcome an early 17-14 deficit, but even with a 32-27 lead going to the fourth quarter, Chittenango had to hang on late as Moon gathered up 14 rebounds to go with 12 points.
Shoemaker got held to five points, but managed nine assists and seven rebounds as Kelly gathered up 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Dahlin again finished with eight points as Samantha Doupe paced Phoenix with 18 points.
Cazenovia, as its follow-up to the Chittenango defeat, had to visit Homer last Wednesday night, and the Lakers were overwhelmed in a 63-36 defeat to the Trojans.
This proved a gradual process, with Homer’s 16-6 push through the second quarter the most lopsided segment of the game. The Trojans’ defense especially concentrated on Lindsay Lawson and held her to eight points.
Both Katie Ammann and Hannah Matteson matched Lawson’s total of eight points, but no Cazenovia player scored in double figures. Meanwhile, Homer got 17 points and 11 rebounds from Caley Cornwell as Brenna Johnson added 16 points and Shawnessy Earle earned most of her 13 points from a trio of 3-pointers.
This dropped Cazenovia’s record to 4-7 as it aims toward games against Camden and Phoenix this week.
