What has proven a rough season for the Baldwinsville wrestling team took a bright turn in last Wednesday’s match against the combined Syracuse City team, which ended in a 66-12 victory for the Bees.
Denied a chance to host its own dual meet on Jan. 6, B’ville would get pins in the first two bouts as Jon Formoza, at 145 pounds, pinned Jose Arocho in 3:12 and John Eustice (152 pounds) finished off Khaled Algasab in 64 seconds.
Later, at 182 pounds, Cameron Salce pinned Abrahim Kennah with 48 seconds left in their bout. Cole Accordino got a 21-second pin over 126-pound opponent Ben Williams as Jacob Cavallo, at 132 pounds, waited until the third period to pin Abdulwahab Algasab.
All of the other points came from forfeits, with Luke Eberl (195 pounds), Gunnar Hunt (220 pounds), Max Naples (99 pounds), Tyler Schardt (113 pounds), Zach Hahn (120 pounds) and Nate Hahn (138 pounds) claiming them.
B’ville then competed Sunday in the Cazenovia Invitational, where the Bees would pick up 110 points to finish sixth in a 16-team field. Indian River (169.5 points) held off Carthage (157 points) for the top spot.
Eberl claimed the title at 195 as he pinned Parker Hogan (Auburn) in the semifinals and then got another pin over Homer’s Hunter O’Gorman 34 seconds into the second period of the title bout. Hunt also wrestled at 195, claiming fifth place.
Meanwhile, at 120, Zach Hahn earned his own title, fighting past South Jefferson/Sandy Creek’s Jon Lillie 9-4 in the semifinals before a championship round where Hahn pulled out a 9-5 decision over Port Byron’s Joe Powers.
No other Bees wrestler reached the finals, but Mike Kral gained fourth place at 160 pounds, going 4-1 for the tournament. Schardt finished fifth at 113, beating Oxford’s Brady Smith 4-1 for that spot. Billy Loadwick finished sixth at 285 pounds.
