Undefeated Chittenango against undefeated Tully – it may have proven the most anticipated match of the high school girls volleyball winter schedule.
Both the Bears (Class B) and Black Knights (Class C) were defending Section III champions. Not only were both teams without a defeat, neither had even dropped a set as they both had raced to 8-0 starts.
However, that showdown would have to wait. Snow forced a postponement of last Thursday’s clash, which will get made up on Jan. 22.
All of this followed last Tuesday’s match against Port Byron – which, like the previous seven matches, turned into a sweep, Chittenango toppling the Panthers 25-11, 25-15, 25-16.
Returning fresh from a two-week holiday break, the Bears had Tyla Cutrie do a bit of everything as she put up 18 kills, plus five aces, four blocks and four digs.
Tiffany Scofield had 13 assists as Megan Mayer got eight digs and four kills. Alyssa Bates had seven digs and Sydney Pellman five digs as Brenna Stanton matched Cutrie’s total of four digs and Natalie Cowburn had two kills.
And it could not have started better for the Chittenango boys volleyball team.
The Bears took part on Dec. 29 in the Spiking In the New Year Tournament at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, where it would beat the other five teams in the field.
Overall, Chittenango won nine of 10 sets, one better than host VVS, who went 8-2. Sauquoit Valley was third at 6-4, followed by Mount Markham (4-6), Herkimer (3-7) and Little Falls (0-10) as Jacob Graham was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Weather then struck, affecting matches against Mount Markham and Westmoreland before this week’s slate where, after facing Little Falls and Herkimer, the Bears are set for a visit from VVS on Saturday afternoon.
