The Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling teams each took part in two matches early in the week leading up to the holiday break, with the Warriors twice taking on Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division foes.
And that included the Warriors’ annual showdown with Baldwinsville, where the two sides were even on the mat, but because Liverpool had a full lineup, it defeated the Bees 42-28.
B’ville won the first three bouts on the card, two of them close decisions as John Sturtz (220 pounds) fell to Gunnar Hunt 4-0 and Hayley Delia (99 pounds) had a 5-3 defeat to Aiden Cali.
Then Liverpool started to stir with Corey Okun’s pin of 106-puond opponent Max Naples, followed two bouts later by a forfeit to Jeremy Ianno at 120 pounds before Jacob Ianno (126 pounds) won a tough 6-3 bout over Cole Accordino.
But things turned for good at 138 pounds when the Warriors’ Jeremiah Paulson pulled out a 5-4 win over Nathan Hahn. That began a streak of six consecutive bouts won by Liverpool.
Two of them were forfeits to Josh Hemingway (160 pounds) and Ron Cyr (182 pounds), but Kenny Haugabook (145 pounds) pinned Jon Formoza and Anthony Piscatelli (152 pounds) beat John Eustice 8-1 as Ben Michalowski clinched it at 170 pounds, topping Dennis Kral in an 8-3 decision.
Before that, Liverpool faced Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday night and defeated the Hornets 49-30, getting it started at 126 with Jacob Ianno pinning Sam Abreham at the end of the second period as Steve Pascarella (132 pounds) beat Jon Scalzetti 9-1.
The Hornets took three of the next four bouts, though in between Piscatelli pinned Ben Christopher early in the third period. Michalowski, got past Sawyer Dereszynski 7-4.
Cyr pinned Ronan Pierie in the second period and Carmen Sheldon (220 pounds) needed 89 seconds to pin Vedat Gokmen. Forfeits to Delia and Okun preceded Jeremy Ianno’s pin of Ben Nosovitch late in the second period of their 120-pound finale.
C-NS, meanwhile, started its week by hosting Cazenovia in a non-league match and using a pair of winning runs to pull away and beat the Lakers 52-20.
Robert Salvett, at 170, began a run of four straight pins by finishing off Casey Cunningham late in the second period.
Julian Zavaglia (182 ) took 2:31 to pin John Frega, with Jack McDonald (195 pounds) pinning Max Fisher in 1:40 and Troyan Jones (220) needing just 33 seconds to pin Michael Bumpus.
Another Northstars spurt began at 99 with Harrison Portorsnok’s 6-2 win over Shaun Zampetti, with Dan Sweeney (106) handling Stan Angus 9-1 and Jacob Montminy (126) edging Jacob Wells 4-2.
In between, Nathan Osborne (120) pinned Matt Knutsen in 37 seconds and Dario Cicarelli (113 pounds) had a third-period fall over Luca Ferreira. Anthony Desimone closed it out at 152 with a pin of Kevin Valentine with 20 seconds left in their bout.
Two nights later, at West Genesee, C-NS met the same fate as Baldwinsville did a week earlier, the Northstars falling 45-31 to the Wildcats.
Beaten in the first two bouts, C-NS answered with McDonald beating Randell Ouimet 6-2 and Troyan Jones (285 pounds) pinning Shawn Sakran in 2:38.
Shortly after, Sweeney’s pin of Jackson Taetsch in 1:49 started a Northstars run where Cicarelli handled Gavin O’Neill 11-2 and Osborne pinned Vincent Calabria early in the second period.
WG took over in the second half of the match, winning six of the final seven bouts. Only Isiah Wahdan, at 145, broke up that run, pinning Cole Saxon in 99 seconds as Anthony Desimone (152) lost a 2-0 decision to Devin Earl.
