Already with a week of competition behind them, the Westhill and Solvay indoor track and field teams carried some competitive edge on most of the others that took part in the afternoon session of last Saturday’s Jack Morse Kickoff Meet at SRC Arena.
Overall, the girls Warriors had 50.5 points, good for fourth place in a 16-team field as the Bearcats got 23.5 points for eighth place. Westhill’s boys were fifth with 42 points and Solvay got 10.5 points. Marcellus was ninth in both the boys and girls standings.
A victory for Westhill’s girls was achieved in the pole vault when Noelle Coolican cleared 9 feet 6 inches to top all individuals as she and Ashley Heffernan topped 17 feet total with Marcellus getting Courtney Otis and Hannah Ryan in third place, topping 14’6”. Bishop Ludden sophomore Sarah Thompson cleared 8 feet.
Solvay dominated the weight throw, where Ashley Bosco tossed it 33’9 ½” and nearly got caught by teammate Sabrina Garnett, who went 33’6” as Westhill’s Bella Lavigne was third, heaving it 33’1 ¾”.
Also for the Warriors, Haylei Coolican, Liz Kessler, Alaina Kenny and Maura McAnaney got to second place in the 4×800 relay in 10:25.54, trailing only Cicero-North Syracuse’s 9:59.82.
Ashley Bolesh, Reilly Geer, Megan O’Reilly and Mackenzie Powers were fourth (4:31.15) in the 4×400 relay, with Kendra MacCaull joining O’Reilly, Powers and Geer for fourth (4:52.02) in the distance medley relay.
Bolesh, a seventh-grader, was second in the individual long jump, going 14’4 ½” as she and Hannah Sheridan got sixth-place in the team portion. Sheridan and Lauren Marshall were fifth in the triple jump, where Bishop Ludden had Zoe Fortin go 33’4”.
Lauren Marshall and Caitlyn McIntyre were fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in a combined 21.17 seconds, with Solvay’s Kyra Crossett and Larissa DeJesus (21.68 seconds) in sixth place.
Crossett and Rhiannon Ackerman tied the Warriors’ Emma Bryant and Abby Feyerabend for fourth place in the long jump, each topping 8’3”. McIntyre and Hannah Sheridan were sixth in the 55-meter dash as the Warriors took seventh place in the 4×200 relay. Solvay also was seventh in the shot put.
Westhill’ sboys side saw Evan Ballard sweep the throwing events. In the weight throw, Ballard went 43’4” to beat the field, and paired with Mark Vaughn for total throws of 70’10” as Solvay’s Shane Spinner and Richie Leonardo were fifth.
Ballard won the individual shot put, heaving it 41’7 ½”, but he and Ben Helfeld were third (72’9 ¼”) in the team portion as Marcellus had Luke Norstad and Chad Casler get second place with 74’5 ½” between them.
Ben Eassa and Evan Watt cleared 22 feet between them in the pole vault, second to Central Square’s 23’6”. Tom Howard, Cal Neiezabytowksi, Wyatt Lavigne and Cade Van Ornam got third place in the distance medley in 4:02.26.
Also, the Warriors had Van Ornam, Jake Suddaby, Mike Ferrara and Jacob Fricano get fifth place in the 4×800 in 9:13.26, with the Warriors seventh in the 4×400 in 4:01.32 and eighth in the 55 sprint.
As for Solvay’s Dylon Ewers, he cleared 5’6” in the high jump, with Marcellus getting Brayton Johnson and Jackson Masters into fourth place in the team standings with combined leaps of 10’3”.
Marcellus runner Ethan Mosure was second among individuals in the boys mile in 4:40.55, just behind Nolan Chiles (Fayetteville-Manlius), who won in 4:40.15, with Mosure, The Mustangs also finished fifth in the distance medley in 4:06.02.
