Things were quite good for the West Genesee boys swim team as it claimed impressive victories in each of its first two meets of the 2017-18 season.
The Wildcats opened at home last Tuesday night, taking on Auburn and piling up points throughout the evening as it roared to a 99-56 victory over the Maroons.
Alex Shuron led the way, claiming the 200-yard individual medley in two minutes, 21.22 seconds and also winning the 100 butterfly in 1:02.36.
Then Shuron paired with Ryan McMahon, Tiernan Guy and Connor Macko to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.03, edging out a second Wildcats quartet of Matt Shields, Zac Zoanetti, Cameron Chao and James Raymonda that posted 1:46.26.
Keegan Scharoun was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 25.50 seconds, with Guy second and Shields third. Mike Whitney went 57.45 seconds to hold off Zoanetti (57.80) in the 100 freestyle.
Matt Shoults was second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.48) and 500 freestyle (5:45.81), with Justin Byrne claiming the diving title with 224.18 points to beat Adriel Schoeck (190.65) and David Puma (189.38).
Shields, Chao, Zoanetti and Whitney won the 200 medley relay in 1:56.36, with McMahon posting 1:05.97 in the 100 backstroke before helping Shuron, Shoults and Schauron go 3:45.46 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Now the Wildcats went to Cazenovia College Friday night to take on Fayetteville-Manlius, who had lost a narrow decision to Baldwinsville in its opener. WG promptly made it 2-0 by defeating the Hornets 99-85.
Even with Zoanetti, Guy, Whitney and Shoults going 1:50.64 to take the 200 medley relay, the Wildcats didn’t seize control until Byrne, with 212.85 points, joined Schoeck (200.03) and Puma (197.60) in another 1-2-3 diving sweep.
Right after, Shoults won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.39 and Shuron claimed the 100 freestyle in 55.44 seconds. Zoanetti won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.24) and Schauron got 1:01.93 to take the 100 backstroke.
Guy, Whitney, Shuron and Shoults won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.10 to F-M’s 1:42.83, with Whitney second in the 50 freestyle and Zoanetti second in the 200 IM. Shuron (200 freestyle) and McMahon (500 freestyle) also had runner-up finishes.
WG would swim just once this week, facing Syracuse City Monday at the same Nottingham High School facility that will host the Section III championships in February.
