Ali Testone and Sarah LaValley were both standouts for a Liverpool girls swim team that claimed second place during the Section III Class A championships at Nottingham High School.
Testone was named the Swimmer of the Meet on Friday after her pair of individual titles in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, while LaValley was victorious in Thursday’s diving competition.
In the 200 IM, Testone posted a time of two minutes, 13.69 seconds to beat the field as Jaida Fox finished sixth in 2:22.77. Then, in the 100 breaststroke, Testone won in 1:08.33 to qualify for the Nov. 17-18 state championship meet at Ithaca College as Marissa Pisegna (1:13.98) finished seventh.
LaValley, who had already qualified for the state meet, earned 404.90 points on the diving board, well clear of the field as Sophia Recuparo finished sixth and Ilyssa Hollenbeck was 12th.
Overall, Liverpool earned 377 points, trailing only Fayetteville-Manlius, who repeated as sectional champions with 470.5 points. Cicero-North Syracuse finished fourth with 267.5 points.
In the 200 medley relay, Ali Testone and Jessica Testone joined Fox and Pisegna as the Warriors finished second in 1:54.97 behind Auburn’s 1:53.63. Later in the meet, Fox, Maddie Rose, Delaney Gellert and Ali Testone went 3:48.23 in the 400 freestyle relay, second to F-M’s 3:46.87.
Fox was fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:31.17, with Maddie Rose sixth in 5:36.70. Jessica Testone went on to finish fourth in the 50 freestyle in 26.06 seconds and was fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.87 as Delaney Gellert was fifth (1:06.75) and Lauren Flynn ninth. Avery Clarke was eighth in the 100 freestyle.
For C-NS, Brooke Fedi finished second in the 200 IM in 2:15.41, just behind Testone, and also would push Testone in the 100 breaststroke before claiming second place in 1:09.81.
Fedi, Grace Devinney, Sarah Walter and Olivia Griffin were third in the 200 medley relay in 1:56.54, this before Walter challenged for the 100 backstroke title, taking second place in 1:04.12 behind Rome Free Academy’s Haley Griffin (1:02.91) as Liverpool’s Megan Winn got seventh place in 1:07.57.
Griffin, on her own, got third place in the 50 freestyle in 26.06 seconds as Alyssa LaFace tied for seventh place with 26.62 seconds. In the 200 freestyle relay, Griffin, Fedi, Devinney and LaFace were fourth in 1:45.44, ahead of Liverpool (1:45.47) in fifth place.
Madeline Thorne was fifth in the diving event with 345.40 points. Devinney took eighth place in the 500 freestyle in 5:38.71. Walter was sixth (57.89 seconds) and Griffin seventh (58.06) in the 100 freestyle. Jeanne Vinette was 10th in the 100 butterfly as C-NS took sixth place in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:03.96.
Moving on to Sunday’s state qualifying meet at Nottingham, C-NS got a victory from Fedi in the 100 breaststroke as, in a time of 1:08.10, she edged CBA’s Lauren Kelly (1:08.13) by three-hundredths of a second, qualifying for the state meet as Ali Testone was third in 1:08.20, also advancing.
Liverpool improved to 1:54.58 in the 200 medley relay, but again finished second, this time to Christian Brothers Academy, who won in 1:51.36. The Warriors were fourth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:46.72, with Liverpool sixth and C-NS eighth in the 200 freestyle relay.
Ali Testone went 2:13.72 in the 200 IM to finish second behind Jamesville-DeWitt’s Amelia Hesler (2:11.27), with Fedi third in 2:15.03. LaValley had 406.85 points in the diving competition, which put her in third place.
Rose was sixth in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.38, with Fox taking seventh place in the 500 freestyle in 5:33.80 and Rose (5:38.56) in eighth place. Walter was seventh in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.65 and Griffin got eighth place in the 50 freestyle in 26.09 seconds.
