Once again, the Jamesville-DeWitt and Oswego girls volleyball teams engaged in a long, energetic battle, and once again the Red Rams could not topple the Buccaneers.
Thursday’s rematch of the Sept. 18 battle where the Buccaneers won in five sets had the exact same result, only it took a different path as, twice J-D trailed and twice it came back.
Each of the first three sets was close, but the Bucs won the first and third by equal 25-22 margins, with the Rams winning the third set 25-21.
Trailing again, J-D got even, 25-16, in the fourth set, but could not keep Oswego from taking the final set 25-19 as Laurin Furlong, with 44 assists, and Adeline Benjamin, with 23 kills, set the pace.
Bishop Grimes got a big win Wednesday over Solvay, claiming the first set 26-24 and the third set 25-20 after losing the second set by that same 25-20 margin. The Bearcats won the fourth set 25-18, but in the final set the Cobras got its own 25-18 win to take the match.
Raquel McDonald had 10 kills, with Bri Squier adding nine kills and six digs. Audrey Hathaway earned 20 assists and matched Mara Gutchess with nine digs. Becca Vinciquerra got 19 digs. Kendall Mancuso finished with 16 digs. Kenna Kelly had five kills, four aces and seven digs.
Grimes won again 24 hours later, sweeping Syracuse Academy of Science 25-10, 25-7, 25-18. Vinciquerra had eight of the Cobras’ 28 aces, with Kelly and Squier each getting five aces as Squier added seven kills. McDonald had 12 kills and Hathaway earned 12 assists.
Fayetteville-Manlius had a glorious chance at a big win against Liverpool last Tuesday night, but could not complete the comeback, falling in five sets to the Warriors.
The Hornets lost the first two sets 25-18 and 25-20 and, on the brink of getting swept, pulled out the third set 25-22 before winning the fourth set 25-22. Only then did F-M wear down as Liverpool won the final set 25-13.
F-M’s Erianna Madill had 45 assists, passing it to Paige Hulbert, who had 29 kills and 10 digs, and Saara Vahtola, who got 21 kills and nine digs. Sophie Thomas added 13 digs as Madill got six digs and four kills.
Liverpool’s Leahana Keeling had 12 kills, with Toria Betelak getting nine kills and 10 blocks. Madison Lapoint had six kills as Sophie Vangelov got five kills to go with 21 assists. Sydney Caviness added 12 assists as Ashley Teixeira (15 digs) got defensive help from Makenzie Stonebarger, who had 12 digs.
When the F-M boys volleyball team hosted Baldwinsville last Tuesday night, it put together a four-set victory over the Bees and improved to 6-3 on the season.
Back on Sept. 15, the Hornets had lost to B’ville in five sets. Seeking to get even, F-M, in the rematch, pulled out the first and second sets by close margins, 25-20 and 25-22. Then, in the third set, the Bees dominated, 25-13, only to give that right back as F-M closed it out, 25-17, in the fourth.
Cade Collum, with 14 kills, and Chris Perry, with 30 assists, led F-M’s efforts. Jordan Glazier got 11 digs as Aaron Costanza earned seven kills, with Joe Powless and Anderson Fuller getting four kills apiece. Collum had three blocks as Costanza gained five digs.
For B’ville, Tyler Aiello still managed 16 kills, with Nate Johns adding 12 kills. Cole Zsemyle had a season-best nine kills as Dan Cerqua got 27 assists, plus four aces, and Aidan Priest had six digs.
J-D’s boys volleyball team won on Wednesday, beating Syracuse as the Red Rams lost the first set 25-23, but won the next two sets by equal 25-16 margins before taking the fourth set 25-21.
Matt Cieplicki dominated on J-D’s front line, earning 18 kills. Owen Farchione and Nick Mandelis each had five kills, with Cameron Howe adding four kills and four aces. Liam Kaplan fed all of them with 30 assists.
