Though a week removed from a five-set defeat to Oswego, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls volleyball team still used that result as motivation to take down every other opponent in its path.
The Red Rams’ match with Fulton last Tuesday night provided a good example of his mindset as J-D swept them, claiming the first set 25-18 and not even making the other sets as close, handling the Red Raiders by 25-12 and 25-16 margins.
Lexie Gambacorto served up even aces, added nine kills and got 10 digs, with Alexandria Payne adding 10 kills and nine digs. Amy Shen had four kills, with Fiona McNeil earning three kills. Madeline Ferris delivered 21 assists, plus eight digs and three kills.
At Auburn Thursday night, J-D prevailed again in straight sets, handling the Maroons 25-22, 25-10, 25-9. Once a close first set was on, it was easy for the Rams as Ferris had 26 assists, four aces, four kills and six digs, with Payne getting 18 kills. Shen notched five kills, four aces and three digs. Gambocorto added six digs.
Fayetteville-Manlius would, like many times before, travel to Baldwinsville last Monday night and not keep up with the undefeated Bees, taking a 25-8, 25-14, 25-19 defeat.
Erianna Madill still picked up 17 assists for the Hornets with the passes often going to Saara Vahtola, who had nine kills and nine digs. Emma Williams and Sonja Napolitano each had four kills as Rachel Quilty-Koval added 13 digs. For B’ville, Maddie Stone had 28 assists, Rileigh Kimball earned 10 kills and Katie Welcher got nine kills.
Turning it around, F-M swept Nottingham 25-16, 25-2, 25-10 on Wednesday night, with Madill notching eight aces to go with 12 assists. Paige Hulbert had five assists as Lingel Emmi led with four kills. Vahtola and Williams had three kills apiece.
F-M played again Thursday and swept Cicero-North Syracuse 25-12, 27-25, 25-19. Vahtola had 10 kills, four aces and five digs, with Hulbert adding nine kills, three aces and six digs. Madill got 24 assists as Quilty-Koval contributed six digs. Napolitano and Ellen Burhle joined Madill in earning three kills.
Following a Sept. 22 defeat to Skaneateles, Bishop Grimes rebounded last Monday night with a steady effort against Jordan-Elbridge, ultimately sweeping the Eagles 25-13, 25-21, 25-16.
Audrey Hathaway gained 14 assists and six digs, feeding a well-balanced front line led by Kendall Mancuso, who had six kills and five digs. Raquel McDonald added five kills, three aces and four digs as Bri Squier got four kills and two aces. Kenna Kelly earned five aces to go with three kills. Mara Gutchess had four digs.
Then, in Thursday’s match against LaFayette, Grimes won the first set 26-24, dropped the second set 25-22 and won the third set 25-20, only to see the Lancers rally and take the last two sets 25-18 and 25-19.
Squier had a season-best 22 kills, with McDonald adding 10 kills as Becca Vinciquerra earned 28 digs and Hathaway got 34 assists, plus 11 digs. Mancuso (16 digs), Gutchess (12 digs) and Kelly (10 digs) all contributed, too, as McDonald got six assists, five digs and four aces.
The boys volleyball team at F-M got into a classic battle with Oswego last Tuesday night. After losing the first set 25-22, the Hornets pulled out the second set 25-23 and then rolled to a 25-15 win in the third set.
Just two points from victory in the fourth set, F-M saw the Buccaneers snatch it away, 27-25, and then claim a fifth-set race to 15 points by a 15-11 margin, Oswego led by Kyle Kon’s 22 kills, Zach Crossman’s 12 kills and Jason Proud’s 43 assists.
On the Hornets’ side, Chris Perry finished with 38 assists, plus three blocks, two aces and two kills. Jordan Glazier added eight digs. Up front, Cade Collum and Aaron Costanza each got 12 kills, while Joe Powless had eight kills, Anderson Fuller six kills and Dean Assenza five kills, plus six digs and three blocks.
Then it was F-M hosting J-D in a local showdown Thursday night. The fired-up Red Rams won the first set 25-22, but all that did was wake up the Hornets, who rolled through the next three sets 25-16, 25-12 and 25-18.
Collum had 17 kills, with Costanza getting eight kills and eight digs. Assenza and Powless each added five kills as Assenza also picked up seven digs. Perry recorded 35 assists as, for J-D, Matt Cieplicki had 13 kills, Ian Freezman added five kills and Liam Kaplan picked up 24 assists. Ryan Evans contributed six digs for the Red rams.
J-D had lost to undefeated Cicero-North Syracuse two nights earlier, a 25-15, 25-16, 25-11 decision where Matt Cieplicki had five kills and Nick Mandelis had four kills, with Owen Farchione adding nine assists. Josh Bigford led the Northstars with 12 kills and six aces as Tristen Cummings earned 22 assists.
