Amid a busy and crowded schedule, area high school boys and girls soccer teams got together Saturday to raise both money and awareness for causes that hit close to home.
Jamesville-DeWitt hosted Fulton Saturday for the eighth annual Sally A. Lock Coaches vs. Cancer Charity Game, started by JV coach Paul Krause in memory of her sister, Sally A. Lock, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010.
Each team sold special red T-shirts, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. When the weekend was done, more than $5,500 was raised for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
As to the varsity game, Fulton prevailed, 2-0, over J-D, the Red Raiders led by Nathan Stuart, who notched one goal and assisted on the other, by Collin Bennett.
At Alibrandi Stadium, Christian Brothers Academy and Fayetteville-Manlius had their annual doubleheader started by the Brothers’ boys soccer head coach, Joe Papaleo, after his daughter, Lauren, lost her life to a heart condition five years ago.
The “Red Out” games benefit the American Heart Association, with both teams raising funds through T-shirt sales and other activities.
on the field, F-M swept the twin bill, pulling out a 1-0 decision in the girls game when Rachel Dobricki notched a second-half goal, assisted by Anna Hartzheim, that capped a game’s worth of pressure on CBA goalie Catherine Burns, who still had 12 saves. None of the Brothers’ seven shots got past Hornets goalie Sabrina Suriani.
And the boys game was just as close, CBA fighting hard, yet still seeing F-M prevail 2-1 as Hunter Knutsen and Cole Teelin put in the goals, assisted by Alex Bychkov and Ryan Varley. Dan Melvin put the Brothers on the board in the second half, assisted by Joey Marsello, but Szidat’s nine saves helped the Hornets stay undefeated.
