The Cicero-North Syracuse girls tennis team broke its season-opening four-match skid last Monday afternoon by toppling Syracuse East 6-1. The singles sweep commenced with Nicole Perrigo topping Kham Hpai 6-4, 6-2 as Miranda Szwej shut out Marian Del Valle 6-0, 6-0 and Cara Temple got past Kabita Nepal 6-1, 6-0.
Syracuse East got its lone point in doubles when Eve Llanos and Meling Le, needing a third-set tie-breaker, prevailed over Hanna Costello and Vanessa Luangaphay 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6). Ava Breitbeck and Jenna Wilson took a turn in doubles, beating Nyuy Pham and Kelly Hunyh 6-1, 6-4, while Anna Dwyer and Alexa Kulah topped Julie Nguyen and Asmita Bhattaria 6-2, 6-0.
As that went on, Liverpool took a 5-2 defeat to West Genesee, only getting one point in singles from Diana Kozenyatko, who beat Greta Hahn 6-2, 6-4 as Erin Chambrone fell to Katie Viau 6-1, 7-5 and Julie Schewe took a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Mikayla Mannara.
Giana LaValle and Aryanna Davia earned a doubles point, topping Mi Tran and Emma Yeager 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), but WG won the other three doubles matches in straight sets, the closest of them Gabby Underwood and Crystal Morgans falling to Anastasia Mello and Phoebe Nelson 6-3, 6-2. Meghan Blake and Valerie Morgan lost, 6-3, 6-1, to Noelle Thurston and Angelina Llanos, with Erica Gibbs and Natalie Kidd falling to Danielle Bertelli and Andrea Andreeva 6-2, 6-1.
Both played again Wednesday, with Liverpool the latest side to fall victim to Fayetteville-Manlius 7-0 as C-NS gained just one point in a 4-1 defeat to West Genesee.
For the Warriors, just one of the seven matches against the Hornets lasted three sets, and Underwood played it, pushing F-M’s Phoebe Wang before taking a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 defeat. The closest doubles match saw the Morgans sisters competitive in both sets, yet still losing, 6-4, 6-4, to Maddy Drapeau and Keara Polovick.
Though most of Thursday’s matches were rained out, C-NS did play, against Syracuse East, and won a 7-0 decision. Temple blanked Marian Del Valle 6-0, 6-0, part of a singles run where Perrigo beat Kham Hpai 6-0, 6-1 and Szwej rolled past Asmita Bhattaria 6-0, 6-1.
To maintain the shutout, Costello and Luangaphay needed three sets to get past Eve Llanos and Meiling Le 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. Breitbeck paired with Wilson to beat Kelly Huynh and Nyuy Pham 6-3, 6-1 as the teams of Dwyer-Kulah and Danielle Dottler-Lexi Pyke claimed their own straight-set wins.
