Three weeks, three lopsided games – and a sense that the Skaneateles football team can do close to whatever it wants against Class C opposition.
In front of a Homecoming crowd Friday night at Hyatt Stadium, the Lakers roared to a 55-6 victory over Hannibal, netting all of those points in the first 2 1/2 quarters by all kinds of means.
Placed at no. 16 in the first state Class C rankings of the season, Skaneateles is bound to go up, having outscored Jordan-Elbridge, Port Byron/Union Springs and Hannibal by a combined 162-33 margin.
Entering this game at 1-1, the Warriors immediately fell victim to the Lakers’ big-play capabilities as Pat Hackler found Cross Bianchi on a 50-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
The rout didn’t start, though, until the second quarter, starting with Hackler’s 21-yard scoring pass to Tommy Scherrer and continuing with the Skaneateles defense forcing a Hannibal fumble that Bianchi returned for six more points.
More points followed when Hackler threw his third TD pass to Nick Wamp from 24 yards out and, immediately after, the Lakers surprised Hannibal with an onside kick. Two plays later, Areh Boni crossed the goal line on a one-yard plunge.
Before making his exit, Hackler threw a fourth scoring pass, 10 yards to Bianchi, and also scrambled twice on TD runs of 12 and 26 yards. It was 55-0 by the midway point of the third quarter.
Hackler completed 11 of 14 passes for 242 yards. Boni’s 105 rushing yards came on just nine carries as Hackler added 74 yards on the ground.
Defensively, James Luebner led a busy unit with 12 tackles, while Jake Nesbit had 10 tackles. Boni and T.J. Greenfield each had eight tackles as Avery Rodgers got seven tackles and Alex Goethe got six tackles.
The Lakers go back on the road next Friday to play the combined Southern Hills Storm. Composed of players from Tully, LaFayette and Fabius-Pompey, the Storm have started 2-1 and are coming off a 49-32 win over Port Byron/Union Springs.
