With the long Labor Day weekend behind them and the school year ahead of them, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team could get to its full-time work, and was ready for that challenge.
The biggest test of the young season for the Lakers came Thursday night, when it confronted Homer at Buckley Gym. Both sides had started 2-0, and the connection between the programs was tight because the Trojans’ head coach, Jeremy Cook, is a Cazenovia High School graduate.
Cook’s homecoming was not a pleasant one for the team he coaches. Cazenovia claimed the first set 25-19 and dominated the second set 25-11. Two points from a sweep, the Lakers were thwarted as Homer claimed the third set 25-23, but the fourth set saw the Lakers win 25-16 to end it.
Morgan Hodinger ruled at the net with 19 kills, but also got 13 digs and served up six aces. Lindsey Lawson added nine kills, five digs and three blocks as Delaney Yorks amassed 28 assists and 12 digs. Lauren Burbidge got seven digs and Laura Clements produced six digs.
On Homer’s side, Katie Lawrence had 13 assists, often passing it to Caley Cornwell, who managed seven kills. Karly Roos had 16 digs as Maya Stoddard got 12 digs, Deede Partgianoni 11 digs and Allyson Natale 10 digs.
Visiting Mexico last Tuesday night, the Lakers rolled to a 25-17, 25-10, 25-11 sweep of the Tigers, giving most of its roster playing time as Hodinger, with eight kills, four aces and three digs, led the way.
Lawson gained five kills, while Burbidge picked up five aces. Delaney Yorks also had five aces to go with 10 assists and three digs. Ryleigh Tilison added three aces. Laura Clements joined Burbidge, Hodinger and Yorks in earning three digs.
Cazenovia goes for four in a row Tuesday night when it hosts Solvay, its only match next week.
