Leave it to the Skaneateles boys golf team to win the first event of the 2017-18 high school sports season.
On a warm Monday morning at Orchard Valley Golf Club, the Lakers debuted against host LaFayette and pulled away to beat the Lancers by a score of 216-252.
Ty Jones led Skaneateles with a nine-hole score of 38, nearly matching par. Kenny Peterson finished with a 42 as three others – Jack Canty, Ben Spinelli and Tyson DiRubbo – each posted 44. Michael Murphy shot a 48.
This was the first of three road matches for Skaneateles this week, who would go to Rogues Roost to face Chittenango on Wednesday and then take on Phoenix Friday at Caughdenoy Links.
At Rogues Roost, the Lakers handled Chittenango 216-259. Jones again had the low individual round, a 39, beating out Murphy’s total of 40. Peterson had a 43 as Canty got a 45 and Tyson DiRubbo contributed a 49. Tanner Laramee (44) and Brad Randall (45) paced the Bears.
To complete its perfect 3-0 start, Skaneateles went to Phoenix on Friday and blasted the Firebirds 222-287. Jones dominated the individual part of it, as his 37 was the best round by seven strokes.
Murphy, with a 44, edged out Peterson (45) for runner-up honors, with Phoenix’s Ryan Shafer leading his side by shooting a 47. But DiRubbo matched Shafer’s 47 as Spinelli put together a 49.
Two more road matches follow this week, at Emerald Crest on Wednesday against Mexico and Vesper Hills on Thursday against Tully. Not until Sept. 11, when the Lakers have a rematch with LaFayette, does it play on home ground at Skaneateles Country Club.
