Stormy weather kept the West Genesee track and field teams from competing in last Thursday’s CNY Counties League championship meet at Liverpool, but the Wildcats would not stay inactive.
Instead, tuning up for this week’s Section III Class AA meet, WG would go to the venue for that event, Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium, where in last Saturday’s C-NS Invitational it finished fourth in the girls division with 80.5 points and the boys division with 67 points.
Carly Benson won for the girls Wildcats in the 800-meter run, posting two minutes, 17.77 seconds to edge Liverpool’s Jenna Schulz 2:18.70. Madalyn Benson nearly won, too, getting second place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:12.25 behind West Seneca West’s Alexis Ramirez (1:11.21).
WG also prevailed in the 4×800 relay, where Mia Mitchell, Liz Morey, Taylor Rech and Mikaelya DeJesus posted 10:17.99, more than 11 seconds ahead of the field. In the 4×400, Benson, Kelsey Fox, Kendall Dombroske and Abby Kuppinger won in 4:07.58 over Liverpool’s 4:08.40. Fox, Megan Delia, Talia Burris and Caitlin Mills were second in the 4×100 in 50.48 seconds, inches behind Watertown (50.46) at the line.
Dombroske, with a time of 1:01.61, was third in the 400-meter dash. Burris cleared 4’10” for third place in the high jump. Mitchell took fourth place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:50.43. Amanda Lowther (5:10.10) and Rech (5:11.05) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run as Mills was fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.04 seconds) and tied for sixth in the high jump as Anna Chwiejczak was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.95 seconds.
On the boys side for West Genesee, Evan Tuthill rolled to victory in the shot put, heaving it 45 feet 7 ¾ inches as Chris McAfee was sixth, heaving it 39’8 ¾”. Tuthill added a third-place discus throw of 131’5”.
David Leff, Ryan Dunning, Ryan Allen and Tony Gettino were second (8:34.66) to Liverpool (8:15.22) in the 4×800 relay. Andrew Berry, Peter Bowman, Esisas Brumfield and Mark Kopp were second (44.27 seconds) to C-NS (43.69) in the 4×100 relay. WG also finished fourth (3:36.78) in the 4×400 relay.
Leff was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:06.12, with Berry third in the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds and Sean Byrnes third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:13.18. Griffin Dombroske took fourth in the triple jump (41’4”) and fifth in the 400 sprint in 52.60 seconds. David Wenner was fifth in the high jump, clearing 5’8”.
Westhill-Bishop Ludden and Jordan-Elbridge also took part, with the girls Warriors seeing Noelle Coolican prevail in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet as Quinn Mannion finished fourth, topping 7’6”.
Sean Corbett, throwing the shot put 43’1”, was second behind Tuthill, Evan Watt finishing third in the pole vault, clearing 12’6” as Bowman topped 12 feet, the same as Watt’s teammate, Ben Eassa.
J-E’s Marion Quigley won the pentathlon as, with 2,826 points, he edged Indian River’s Patrick Leonard (2,803 points) for the top spot. Ryan Chiaramonte got third place in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.97, with WG’s Tim Huppman fifth in 1:02.22. Then Chiaramonte, Ethan Kinney, Logan Kinney and Hugh Schader finished third in the 4×800 relay in 8:41.82.
The Eagles’ Theresa Dristle got third place in the 3,000-meter run in 11:14.60, beating out Morey (11:20.58) in fourth place, and added a sixth in the pole vault. Meagan Jackson was fifth in the pentathlon, with Emma Burns fifth in the 800 in 2:26.83.
Solvay took part in Saturday’s Clinton Junkyard Relays and saw its girls team finish third out of 14 teams, with the boys eighth and, overall, the Bearcats earning 147.5 points for third place as host Clinton won with 262 points.
A win came in the 400 hurdles relay, a three-person event where Katie Harrington, Kyra Crossett and Serenity Thomas had a combined time of 3:41.96 to easily outpace the field. Harrington won the individual high jump, clearing 4’11”, and paired with Brielle Bagozzi and Alexa Bagozzi to top 14’3” total and win there, too.
Ashley Bosco earned a first-place shot put toss of 35’11 ½” as she, along with Sabrina Garnett and Jennifer Klix, won with total throws of 80’4”. Bosco then threw the javelin 86’11” to win there, too, pairing with Harrington and Alexa Bagozzi for first place with throws up to 224’1” as Garnett had a winning 20-pound weight throw of 31’ ½”.
Thomas, Crossett, Zoe Francemone and Jordyn Willsey were second (4:30.80) in the 4×400 as Francemone, Thomas, Alexa Bagozzi and Phoebe Guadagnolo were third in the 4×100 in 55.68 seconds. The Bearcats also got third in the 1,600 sprint medley in 4:54.85. Francemone and the Bagozzi sisters were third in the pole vault.
Crossett, Harrington and Jiana Speach were third in the 100 hurdles, with the Bearcats fourth in the 4×800 in 12:22.68.
Solvay’s boys team won a unique 4×100 relay for athletes of 180 or more pounds as Nate Gardner, Jordan Tryon, Zach Langdon and Mike Pellizzari posted 51.65 seconds. The Bearcats tied for fourth in the high jump, Gardner, Lamar Flood and Justice Shirley topping 15’6” between them. Langdon, Ed Matysuk and Jordan Devereaux were second in the javelin with combined throws of 290’8”.
John Bliss, Tyriq Block, Jordan Devereaux and Lamar Flood were fourth in the 4×100 in 46.68 seconds, with the Bearcats fifth in the 1,600 sprint medley and shot put.
