With Section III waiving the 40 percent eligibility standard for the upcoming playoffs, other local teams could relax a bit and just play out as many games as it could without having to worry about doing enough to get to the sectional tournament.

Westhill didn’t have to worry about such things. Instead, the state Class B no. 10-ranked Warriors focused on getting a regular-season sweep of Solvay, and got it last Wednesday with a 12-3 victory over the Bearcats.

Wasting no time, Westhill scored five runs in the first inning, two runs in the second and four runs in the third to build an 11-0 lead. Tom Cunningham, with a double and three RBIs, led the push as Jordan Marcano scored three times. Ben Coates, Andrew O’Connor and Corey Frassica had one RBI apiece.

For the most part, Solvay hurt itself on defense, committing eight errors. Meanwhile, the Bearcats could not get a run against Warriors starter Ben Coates in his four-inning stint, though it did score three times in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout.

Solvay, like Westhill the week before, found itself shut down by Skaneateles pitching ace Cregg Scherrer, the Bearcats taking an 8-0 defeat to the Lakers as Scherrer gave up just two hits, an Owen Lansing double and Jordan Goldman single, and struck out 12 in his 6 2/3 innings on the mound.

Meanwhile, the trio of Jake Dippold, McKyle Sands and Mason Sands surrendered just eight hits, but Skaneateles pulled away with four runs in the top of the seventh as Adam Lupo belted a home run and got four RBIs to lead the vistors.

On Thursday, Westhill resumed action and beat Phoenix 10-4, but it wasn’t that easy. The Firebirds used three runs in the third inning and a run in the fourth to go in front 4-2 and chase starter John Geer, but the Warriors roared back with three runs in the fifth and tacked on five runs in the sixth.

Tom Cunningham pitched four strong innings of relief. He also had three hits as Cunningham and Coates, with two hits, keyed the comeback. E.J. Zawatzki converted a hit and three walks to three runs scored. Zawatzki, Coates, Ben Mroczek, Jordan Marcano and Dante Furco had one RBI apiece.

Bishop Ludden began its week with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Onondaga last Monday afternoon. The Tigers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings off Kevin Hawk, but the Gaelic Knights tied it, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth on run-scoring doubles by Tom Westers and Nick Reppi.

Yet that tie did not last, OCS pushing across a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and getting the final three outs from pitcher J.J. Stevens, who held Ludden to four hits, two of them by Ed Walser. Hawk struck out nine in his complete-game effort.

On Wednesday, Ludden rebounded with a 6-2 victory over Cato-Meridian, overcoming an early 1-0 deficit by scoring four times in the top of the fourth, more than enough for pitcher Tom Westers, who in six innings struck out seven Blue Devils, overcoming seven hits and three walks.

Nick Reppi doubled twice and drove in two runs, with David House adding a pair of RBIs. Westers and Hawk had one RBI apiece.
