In the final week of the high school boys tennis regular season, West Genesee kept adding to its win total, starting with last Tuesday afternoon’s 6-1 decision over Syracuse East.
Chris Upwood led the singles effort for the Wildcats, beating Samir Subba 7-5, 6-1, while Matt Mannara also won in straight sets. Ryan Joyce led early, but took a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 defeat to Has Ble.
Moving to doubles, WG claimed all four of the matches, the closest one coming when Jimmy Harter and Noah Ruston got past Mike Lloyd and Mike O’Neil 6-3, 6-4. Otherwise, the teams of James Plunkett-Alex Argiro, Stefan Atanasov-John Northrop and Michael White-Erik Shanahan lost just five games in six combined sets.
Westhill was back in action last Wednesday and managed just a single point in a 4-1 defeat to Skaneateles. It came from singles, where Jackson Bradley overcame an early deficit to beat Connor Driscoll 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.
Ryan Rolince also played three sets, but lost, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, to Dan Judge as Andrew Doner fell to Joe Ausio 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, Colin Catone and Tom Chaddock lost to Matt Benson and Jack Lawson 6-2, 6-2 as Dan Ferrara and Conor Mahoney had a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Ryan Bailey and Malcolm Lombardi.
Though it was closer on Thursday, Westhill fell to Cazenovia 3-2, the key point coming in third singles when Mahoney went to three sets with Dan Gavilondo, but lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
Bradley beat Orson Sproule 6-3, 6-1, as Doner fell to Mitch Romig 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, Rolilnce paired with Mike Ferrara to blank Teddy Coughlin and Griffin Monahan 6-0, 6-0, while Chaddock and Catone lost, 6-2, 7-5, to Nick Barna and Liam Flannery.
For Marcellus, the week started with a 4-1 defeat to Cazenovia last Monday where Andrew Kammer, Quinn Clarke and Tyler Guerrina lost their singles matches.
A point came from doubles, where Dan Wrona and Noah LaFever, in a third-set tie-breaker, outlasted Coughlin and Dan Gavilondo 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5). But in the other doubles match, Shawn Manke and Justin Costa could not hold on to an early lead in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Nick Barna and Liam Flanery.
It proved rough for the Mustangs in Friday’s 5-0 defeat to unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy. Guerrina earned a couple of games in a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Milan Gupta, while Manke fell to Ben Vlassis 6-0, 6-0 and Kammer had a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Dean Vlassis. The doubles teams of Noah LaFever-Dan Wrona and Quinn Clarke-Dakota Dunbar also lost in straight sets.
