All of the rains that plagued the first weekend of May and caused flooding in some parts of Central New York also held up most area high school golf competition until the courses could dry out.
Marcellus, who entered the week undefeated and atop the Onondaga High School League Liberty division standings, returned last Tuesday at Millstone against Jordan-Elbridge, rolling to a 199-254 victory over the Eagles to make it eight wins in a row.
Jay Colella shot a nine-hole score of 36, one ahead of teammate Carter Austin’s 37. In fact, Marcellus had the five best individual totals as Frank Szczech managed a 40, with Tom Fiacchi and Tim Sheridan both posting 43. Meanwhile, on J-E’s side, Max Bondgren led with a 44, with Ben Sullivan, Nate Melfi and Cole Melfi each posting 48.
Two days later, against another local rival, Marcellus moved to 9-0, stopping Solvay 200-265 at Pine Grove and getting an under-par round from Colella as he raced to a 34 and Austin snared second place with a 38.
Sheridan improved to a 41 and Szczech got a 42, each of them ahead of the Bearcats’ Jon Smolen, who led his side with a 43. Fiacchi, with his 45, beat four other Solvay golfers as Joe Sardo had a 51, ahead of Drew Lamont (55), Noah Capella (57) and Brendan Smith (59).
Then, on Friday, Marcellus defeated Cazenovia 204-215 to run the win streak to 10, and did so at Cazenovia Country Club, where Colella shot a 34 to beat out the Lakers’ Cody Thorp, who had a 35. Austin had a 38 and, to help the Mustangs pull away, Sheridan and Fiacchi both posted 43 and Szczech finished with a 45.
Before that, Solvay played last Tuesday and lost, 239-243, to Pulaski. Smolen tied for the best individual round, shooting a 43, the same as the Blue Devils’ Chris Olson, but three other Pulaski golfers shot 49 or lower, while only Lamont, with a 47, joined Smolen in that category for the Bearcats.
J-E had its own match against Pulaski on Wednesday and took a 255-260 defeat. Bondgren shot a 43, the same as the Blue Devils’ Caleb Davies, while Sullivan’s 49 equaled that of Olson. Bishop Ludden lost a close 248-249 decision to Port Byron on Thursday afternoon.
In girls golf, Marcellus earned its own victory last Thursday afternoon when it put away Chittenango 207-242 at Tuscarora. Mary Colella shot a 47, again leading the Mustangs as Elise LaBombard and Kendall Koloski both shot 53 and Ashalin Chunco earned a 54. Megan Pierce, with a 58, shot the Bears’ low total.
Westhill did play last Monday and took a 228-257 defeat to Cazenovia. Angela Vigliotti shot a 61 at Cazenovia Country Club, with Ellie Masterpole adding a 63, but the Lakers had the top two rounds from Erin Howles (52) and Hannah Staiger (54).
When West Genesee went up against CNY Counties League-leading Fayetteville-Manlius last Thursday at Westvale, it could not keep up with the Hornets in a 179-233 defeat.
Mikaela Riley did shoot a 52, while Hannah Kirk and Kara Kallfelz both posted 60 and Kaitlin Bivens got a 61. They all trailed F-M’s leading quartet, though, as Madison Kingsley shot a 42 and Maggie Bonomo got a 43, with Justine Burness and Campbell Kennedy each posting 47.
