It will prove quite a Wednesday afternoon at Buckley-Volo Field when the Cazenovia track and field teams host Skaneateles and finds out which Lakers sides will finish on top of the Onondaga High School League Liberty Central division standings.
The boys showdown was made possible by Cazenovia moving to 4-0 on the season last Wednesday afternoon against visiting Solvay, dominating the meet from start to finish and defeating the Bearcats 111-30.
Together, the McPherson brothers were part of five race victories. Jimmy McPherson claimed the mile in five minutes, 9.57 seconds over Noah DeRochie (5:13.07) while also winning the 3,200-meter run in 11:45.4, again with DeRochie (11:50.3) second.
Sean McPherson beat Sam Deleon, 55.1 seconds to 55.9, to take the 400-meter dash. Then McPherson paired up with Alec Boone, James Pavelchak and Elijah Harper to go 45.9 seconds and win the 4×100 relay before joining DeLeon, Boone and Pavelchak to win the 4×400 relay in 3:48.7.
Boone gained his own victory in the 100-meter dash, edging Solvay’s Jordan Devereaux, 11.6 seconds to 11.7, while also going 20 feet 3 ½ inches to win the long jump. Justin Gagnon went 17.5 seconds to win the 110 high hurdles as part of a 1-2-3 sweep with Jacob Olkowski (19.2) and Nate Spangler (19.4).
Jack Gabor won the 800-meter run in 2:14.6 as Cormac Race was second in 2:19.5. Gabor, Race, DeRochie and Colton Kubinec paired up in the opening 4×800 relay and took that race in 10:08.3.
Will Kmetz threw the shot put 40 feet 2 inches to beat Chad Carges (38’5”), while Spangler was third with 37’5”. In the discus, Christian Winkler threw it 116’9” and beat out Kmetz (106’1”) as Angelo Annotto was third, throwing it 103’10”.
Ray Satchwell, third in the long jump, went to the top in the triple jump by going 37’ ½” to beat Aiden Emoff (35’6”) as Harper was third (35’5 ½”). Deleon cleared 11 feet in the pole vault to beat Collin Killiany, who cleared 10 feet. Dalton Sevier was third in the high jump, clearing 5’4”.
Cazenovia maintained its winning ways by claiming first place among 14 sides at Cooperstown’s Don Howard Invitational on Saturday afternoon. With 102.5 points, the Lakers edged out Oneonta (98 points) for the top spot.
Boone was victorious in the 100 in 11.82 seconds, the only time under the 12-second mark. In the 200, Boone got to second place in 24.09 seconds, with Sean McPherson close behind as he gained third place 24.54 seconds and Pavelchak finished seventh.
Not only that, but Boone recorded a second-place long jump of 19’4 ¾”. Together, McPherson, Boone, Pavelchak and Harper won the 4×100 in 45.86 seconds.
Gagnon needed 17.42 seconds to gain second place in the 110 hurdles, and added a runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.24. Satchwell was third in the triple jump, going 37’1” ahead of Harper in fourth (36’6”) and Aiden Emhoff in fifth place as Satchwell also took fifth in the long jump and cleared 5’2” for fifth place in the high jump.
Jimmy McPherson got third place in the 3,200 in 10:53.90, with DeRochie seventh as McPherson added a fourth-place finish in the mile in 4:56.50. Gabor, Race, Kubinec and Hunter McCullough were fifth in the 4×800 in 9:42.86.
Kmetz was sixth in the discus, throwing it 110’8” as Annotto was seventh (109’2”) and Spangler eighth (106’8”), with Kmetz ninth (39’3 ½”), Spangler 10th and Chad Carges 11th in the shot put. Killany tied for fifth in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet.
A day earlier, the Chittenango boys track team took part in the New Hartford Invitational, where Jacob Blaszkow, Ersilio Cerminaro, Phillip Abell and Mike Capeling finished third in the 4×800 relay in 8:41.44. That same quartet got fourth place in the distance medley relay in 11:26,13.
Nick Stanton had a fourth-place long jump of 20 feet ½ inch. Lucas Spiridilozzi finished seventh in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.20, with Brian Schermerhorn 10th in the 800. The Bears were also sixth in the 4×400 in 3:55,92 and sixth in the 1,600 sprint medley in 4:07,18,
