It proved quite an eight-day stretch for the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team.
First, the Northstars were triumphant at the April 28 Chittenango Invitational. Then it beat archrival Liverpool last Wednesday head-to-head at Bragman Stadium and, to cap it off, won again last Friday in the New Hartford Invitational.
With a total of 105 points, C-NS held off West Genesee, who was second with 90 points. Host New Hartford took third place with 77 points.
Joe Williams made it to first place in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning in 14.86 seconds as Utica Proctor’s Victor Rodriquez was second in 15.51 seconds. Then, in the 400-meter hurdles, Williams, in 57 seconds flat, held off Whitesboro’s Kyle Christian (57.28) for the top spot as Williams also finished fourth (38 feet 10 ½ inches) in the triple jump.
Connor Hayes earned his first win of the season in the long jump by going 20’6 ½”, just ahead of West Canada Valley’s Anthony Scalise (20’5 ¾”) and the field. Ryan Bristow cleared 11’6” to finish third in the pole vault, while Judah Bailey was sixth in the triple jump (36’8 ½”).
C-NS also won the 4×200 relay as Matt Kilian, Ryan Massena, Anthony Pauli and Malcolm Christian posted 1:35.57 to beat WG (1:37.09) in the runner-up spot. Later, in the distance medley relay, Nathan Poirier, Brandon Martin, Allen Garnes and Sam Barber won in 11:06.86 as Jamesville-DeWitt was second in 11:10.35. In the 4×100 relay, Kilian, Pauli, Massena Connor Hayes were second in 45.08 seconds, just behind the 44.95 posted by West Genesee.
Allen Garnes nearly won the 400-meter dash, taking second in 53.25 seconds as Jamesville-Dewitt’s Mike Potamianos (51.52 seconds) prevailed. Kilian got fourth place in the 100-meter dash in 11.89 seconds, with Barber fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:59.94. Zak Kennedy got fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles in 24.93 seconds.
Poirier (4:41.91) beat out Martin (4:42.60) as they were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the mile. Pauli, Hayes, Kennedy and Allen Garnes were fourth in the 1,600 sprint medley relay in 3:51.15 as Calvin Garnes, Mike McBride, Aidan Dietz and John Perperian were fifth in the 4×800 relay in 8:55.31.
A day later, the C-NS girls track team made its way to Camden High School for the Copper City Classic. The Northstars picked up 60 points, finishing second in a 21-team field as Rome Free Academy, who had to move the meet to Camden from its home track at RFA Stadium, still won with 106.33 points.
Mia Pestle would zoom to victory in the 1,500-meter run, her time of 4:50.60 more than eight seconds ahead of RFA’s Gianna Capoccia (4:59.02) at the line. In the 800, Pestle made it to fifth place in 2:23.70. Cassie Baldwin, in 17.39 seconds, beat out Watertown’s Janiesia Crockett (17.65) to win the 100-meter hurdles.
Sierra Davis was victorious in the triple jump, her best leap of 35’7” beating out teammate Shayla Webb, who was second by going 35’4”. Davis also got sixth place in the long jump with a best leap of 15’3” and took eighth place in the 100 sprint.
Kierrah Butler added a victory in the shot put, tossing it 35’8 ¼” as RFA’s Sarah Crockett (35’1 ½”) took second place. Butler also had a fourth-place discus throw of 92’4” as Annina Marullo got sixth place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:57.89.
Ashlyn Slate, Abbey Szumloz, Lauren Witek and Jamie Wagner were fourth in the 4×400 relay in 4:26.51, with the Northstars seventh in the 1,600 sprint medley in 4:56.53 and eighth in the 4×800. Liliana Klemanski tied for eighth in the high jump, clearing 4’5”, Szumloz was ninth in the 400 hurdles, with Megan Trubia ninth in the 3,000-meter run.
